In Flanders Fields By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army

"In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields."

Somewhat off point - there’s a good chance that most high schoolers couldn’t read that plaque - they don’t teach cursive in elementary school anymore.

Amen...The Home of the Free, because of the Brave.

God rest them all.

Well it is a lesson in why the very best poems often come from the heart and also the importance that it is those who have served that make the most basic of education possible.

Thanks for posting this. My great-uncle served with the 38th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Forces. He was seriously wounded in action in France on September 2nd, 1918, and died of his wounds on September 10th. He’s buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, which is a mile north of Boulogne.

Biggirl - I’m stealing the picture and posting it to FB (along with the text for the non-cursive empowered). Very appropriate for the holiday - thanks for putting it up.

I'll give it a try.
"In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place;
and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing,
fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived,
 felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved,
and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw The torch;
be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow In Flanders fields."
