Today you can buy a telescope better than Newtons’ for about $50. Amazing what they were able to do with such crude instruments.
The first observation (stellar aberration) that led to relativity was done in the 1700’s. The speed of light was first measured in the 1600’s by observing Jupiter’s moon Io.
Most theoreticians won’t even TOUCH the instrumentality...but he could get his hands dirty, too. I believe that he built a few as demonstrations...he wasn’t all that interested in observational astronomy.
He was elected to Parliament, Supposedly, his only recorded statement there was that it was too hot and that someone should open a window.
