Microsoft loves to use codenames and from the past few years, there are two in particular that you may recall; Blue and Threshold. With Windows 10 (Threshold) coming to market sometime this summer, Microsoft is already starting to work on the next update for the OS.
Microsoft has said multiple times that Windows will be moving at a faster cadence than in the past and they are already working on a release for 2016. The codename for the project is 'Redstone', a popular item in the recently acquired game, Minecraft.
At this time, not much is known about Microsoft's plans for Windows vNext, but the company has now entered the planning stages of the update, as confirmed by two internal sources. This shouldn't come as a big surprise as the company is perpetually planning for the next iteration of its software, regardless of the platform.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Microsoft does the work for a release years in advance of the release itself, so hearing now about a next-after-the-coming-one is about right.
Of course, a project codename is just a name, could be misdirection, who knows...
Slashdot has a lot of related commentary over here.
One has to wonder about all the recent promises made about Windows 10 and the forever updates... how does a new release fit in? Is it just another “update”?
Didn’t windows 10 just happen? Why not get rid of the bugs and improve that version before advertising the next one? Makes me want to rush out and buy 10 ... not.
It hasn't happened yet, unless you count the Technical Previews.
Codename: Circlejerk
Codename: Hope&Change
This caught me off guard on the name... I am by NO means a Minecraft player, or an PC insider.. But when Microsoft spent all that money on Minecraft I thought..”I wonder if they could tie the game to their operating system?”
I had pictured replacing that hints and tips stuff they used to do with the paperclip, with something more Minecraft like, and possibly different themes and designs based on the game...possibly a minigame right on the computer when you buy it...
Probably another forklift on the interface and menus...
10 is fine, 11 doesnt matter it will be free if you own 10.
Go troll in a different thread, you bring nothing to the discussion.
If it is just to make money for a meaningless upgrade, at least be honest about it. Too many of us refuse to jump on the merry-go-round and play the game.
I have a fairly fast box running 7 64 bit, going to take a helluva lot to convince me I need to change. Only retired my Xp box to non internet duty as it was so slow.
First off no. MS is moving away from the pay model they had before. Once you are in the Windows 10 ecosystem, it is free for life.
Secondly the rest of the world isnt sitting still. Hackers adapt, games become more intertwined with the OS and since windows is trying to create a unified structure between devices they will need to keep up with iOS and Android in the mobile space.
Codename for my next upgrade: linux or ATBW
I disagree. I bring levity to the discussion. Do you work for Microsoft?
No, but that wasnt levity or humor. Perhaps watch some standup. Go to a comedy club, maybe an open mic night. Come back with the new material.
Might even be a double upgrade...
That leaves me out.
