GAFFNEY, S.C. - No, the Gaffney Peachoid isn't covered up because it's cold. The water tower is draped in a protective curtain as crews work to give it a facelift.
Last year, work began to give it a makeover.
Workers prepped the giant peach-shaped landmark by putting up a support system that allowed them to hang the curtain safely for sandblasting and painting.
Now that the cover is up, they will start the make it look shiny and new.
The project is expected to be finished by the end of the month.
We always looked for it when we went through,
there was a place called the Peach Blossom Diner
not far from there. Great place years ago.
Headed south on I-85 from Gaffney, Peach Blossom Diner is near Milliken in North Spartanburg. Still open...I think.
Yeah, one of those shiny polished metal places, kinda
like an airstream trailor.
Been a while.
Why make it shiny? Peaches are fuzzy!
You’d need to ask the town council in Gaffney...or President Underwood.
Saw it today while driving to Charlotte on I-85! It always used to mark the road I would take to the RevWar Cowpens battlefield, the American Cannae, where Daniel Morgan, his backwoods militiamen, and a few companies of Delaware, Virginia and Maryland regulars smashed the hubris out of Banastre Tarleton and the Redcoats in the most one-sided battle of the War of Independence.
Man of few words knows his American History alright.
Peach Blossom Diner is now located on what is called Business 85. Good food and service. I live about two miles from the Peachoid in Gaffney, and it has been the “butt” of many jokes.
I remember the first time I saw it. I thought it looked like a giant butt. I still do.
I grew up in York county and remember that peach tower only too well. Didn’t know about the diner. Have to try it when visiting.
True story. When wife and I were dating, we were driving around Gaffney and heading North. I had my mind on her when I spotted the peach about a mile away. For a few seconds, I thought I saw the biggest full moon known to man. Turns out, they had just turned on the lighting surrounding the Peachoid. LOL
The diner is actually in Spartanburg county on business 85. Near the highway 176 interchange.
I got my walking exercise for the week just looking at that climb. Ah, to be young again and run up those steps!
Legal fireworks and way better tourist kit-kat than Stuckey’s at South Of The Border. Pedro was a major landmark on the summer vacation trip to Myrtle Beach, and remains a fond childhood memory.
