Queston for your cat people.

My daughter said she came home the other day to see the cat looking under the stove and taking occasional swipes there.

My daughter pulled a toy out.

Should we assume the toy was it or pull the stove out and hunt for mouse holes?

Look for a mouse. You’ll see droppings if you have one.

Might depend on the frequency in which you experience rodentia..

In this Olde Farmhouse that we are allowed to cohabit with several Feline Overlords, when we see one or more of said Overlords paying extra interest to the area containing the range, dishwasher, and sink we can be fairly sure that there is one or more guests that have come in from the cold.

I have a small collection of electronic rodent sleep-aids that work well.

Should you acquire one or more, DO NOT use peanut butter as bait even though the manufacturer says so. The peanut butter does work BUT oil from the peanut butter eventually gums up the works and renders the unit incapable of offering a good nights sleep to a rodent that checks in. (This may be the manufacturers method to increase sales.. ;-) Use stuff like stale bread, small chunks of cookie, anything that is not oily or exuding any other such gunky stuff.

If I discover that a guest has inadvertently expired in the night, I give then an eternal membership in our exclusive inground pool and spa club whee they can become one with the universe.
