Jennifer Lawrence Is Now a Music Star, Too

(Newser) – Jennifer Lawrence may have an Oscar to her name, but she's also winning praise for her singing chops. In the latest Hunger Games movie, Lawrence sings a song called the Hanging Tree that is now No. 2 on the US iTunes chart and threatening to crack the top 40 of Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart. (We'll know Wednesday.) Overseas, the song is No. 12 in Australia and No. 14 in the UK, notes US Weekly.

I saw H1 and H2, and I was leery about seeing part 1 of H3. The caution was confirmed, as it was a lot of talk. You know, "filler."

That being said, the song "Hanging Tree" is a simple enough song. It would fit a time when the press was is controlled, manipulated, and censured and when people had limited resources and spare time to indulge themselves in a greater variety of music and entertainment choices. But in this movie the song became something more meaningful and powerful when the patriots sang it as they fought and died in the attack on the hydroelectric power plant which supplies the Capital with power.

Now I hope people understand that I am not comparing the abusive Capitol in H3 with the abusive Capitol in Washington D.C. And certainly I'm not comparing the totally corrupt and narcissistic President Snow with any current President.

I was very disappointed in the first movie. I felt that if I hadn’t read the book (well, listened since it was an audio book) I wouldn’t have known what the heck was going on.

We watched the second one this weekend and I thought it was a bit better.

Most of the actors are very good in their parts. I really enjoyed seeing the guy who played “Bolts”. He played an EXTREMELY evil man in “Boardwalk Empire” and he was just superb in that part. By the end I was torn between hating his character and loving watching him play it.

I was thinking the same when I saw Dr. Narcisse in the Hunger Games!

I’m not a film buff by any stretch and rarely go to the movies but I did enjoy HG1 and HG2.

So I’ve been eager to see HG3/1 - your commentary is a bit disappointing but similar to many who have seen the movie.

I’ll probably see it anyway and hope HG3/2 returns to exceptionality.

"The Hanging Tree"

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run,
So we'd both be free.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Wear a necklace of hope,
Side by side with me.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run,
So we'd both be free.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree.

Is this the old Marty Robbins hit, “The Hanging Tree,” or something else with the same name. Or is it the old folk tune, “Hangman, Hangman,” under a different title?

That’s his name! You’d think I could think of that, as it was a perfect Dickensian name for him. Hubby tells me he also plays a role in the new James Bond flicks.

A movie star making a record? Following in the great tradition of Leif Garrett, William Shatner and Gwyneth Paltrow.

In this case, the movie star cried when she had to sing...but the director wanted it in her voice.

Few movies have EVER captured the essence of the book better than H3. Yes, there is a bit more talking and thoughts than continuous action. Not a problem.

Definitely not the Marty Robbins “Hangin Tree” or the folk song “Hangman Hangman.”

I don’t to convince anyone from seeing Part 1. There really are some good moments in it.

“President Snowbama.”

A great time to bring in our graphic specialist to have Obamas face with President Snow’s beard, and President Snowbama.

I do believe that can go viral.
