Vin Scully is without peer. Even now, he is one of the very best in baseball. I buy the MLB package to hear his calls.
How many teams have someone that calls the TV broadcast solo?

His retirement has to be imminent, next 2-3 ears.
Don’t know why they don’t let him do the all star game or at least the first tree innings. Fox TV could also use him on the world series.
It would be a classy way for baseball to recognize him and to acknowledge his retirement.
As a former Dodgers’ fan, I can tell you that the Dodgers and their fans ain’t what they used to be.

In decades past, a lot of announcers worked that way. That's how I like it. They were talking to us, the listeners and viewers.
These days, with two or three men in the booth, they're talking to each other.

Of course, but how many still have solo TV broadcasts?
I would tend to think radio might have more solo guys if there any out there, does Uecker call the Brewers radio broadcast solo? Any Brewers fans know? Jon Miller has always been great, but I don’t think he does them solo, or at least he didn’t with the O’s.

I e-mailed MLB and Fox Sports about letting Scully do the all-star game.
Maybe those of you who think that’s a good idea would do the same.
Scully was mentored by the late, great Red Barber (as were Ernie Harwell and Phil Rizzuto.) Now Vinny is taking Red’s mentoring and paying it forward.
We could use more announcers like Scully and Harwell and fewer of these circus clowns we have today.
Charlie Slowes, the radio voice of the Washington nationals, is one of the best. Unfortunately, we hve mroe announcers like John Sterling (although he’s the extreme example) than like Slowes or Scully.
Vin Scully is one of a handful of people that make me feel ‘old’.
I remember when he broke in and figured he would ‘never make it’ now they talk of him like he is some relic.
These announcers today SUCK - as a whole - as much as I ‘hate it’ when the ‘homers’ ruin a game, it is much worse in the Playoffs and the Series when the announcers apparently have NOT done their homework by at least studying the team they are covering.
Back in the day, the teams participating had their announcers. I would say YES to Scully as the 3rd man but the two pretty boy loudmouths and that all important 3rd person on the field (s/s).
As much as I despise FP with the Nationals, I would say that at least one of each of the teams announcers be available for the playoffs etal. AT least they KNOW the team they are broadcasting. Let the network have the lead but put knowledgeable (of the team) people in the booth.
and always talking. A guy hits a double or runs for a 5 years gain and they replay it 2-3 times and talk over it as if it’s the second coming of Babe Ruth.
There was a guy on TV CBS in the early 60s, I think Jim Scott. He would say Hornung runs right. Gain of 4. Third and six. and he would be quiet for awhile. I sometimes turn off the sound just to stop the noise.
I can do my own replays if I need them. Rather than see some routine play 3 times.

What’s with all the loud rock music blaring at the arenas and stadia? I can hardly goto a game anymore. I want baseball to be pastoral ala George Carlin and not try to compete with the NBA.
Like your use of a local on the playoffs. Would also be interesting to have one local from each team.
It only seems that way because Scully works alone. However, he does pause at times. He’s famous for not talking over a cheering crowd. And when he does talk, he does so in an unrushed way.
Now, with two or more in the booth, someone is always talking, and speed talking at that. There is no dead air. (Sponsors fear dead air. They think dead air will cause viewers to change channels.)
Yes, I am once again in the minority. I do have a mute button and use it often. Also I can fast forward as I want.
Compare that to Tom Hamilton of the Cleveland Indians. If an Indian makes an out, Tom gets all gloomy and runs him down. But if it's a hit, Tom starts shouting and exulting. Talk about manic depressive.
Although I'll take that over the goofy Padres announcers.
