It’s a genetic disease inherited through the mother. Basically the X chromosone is “crooked” or misshapen; hence the name “fragile X”. It presents in both females and males but since females have a 2nd X chromosone, the symptoms are typically less severe than in boys. Many cases diagnosed as autism or autism-spectrum are suspected of being Fragile X. A friend of mine has a son with it.
