A walkabout elk wandered into a family house in southern Sweden, but after making itself at home the animal had to be put down due to grisly injuries sustained during the break-in.
The elk was spotted walking around in a residential area of Helsingborg on Monday morning. It then proceeded to jump through a window and smash its way into a house, setting of an alarm in the process.
Luckily nobody was home, as the family was away on holiday.
Police were quickly on the scene and encountered the elk exploring the living room. A hunter was then dispatched as the animal was considered dangerous, the authorities said.
"The elk was alive when we got there, but was badly hurt so we called out a hunter who killed the animal," Rebecka Arnhed of the local police told the Helsingborg Dagbladet newspaper.
A spokesperson for the Skåne police said it was a necessary measure to put the animal to death.
"They can become aggressive when they are injured or in a stressful situation," Maya Forstenius told the Sydsvenskan newspaper.
Nobody was injured in the incident. The dead elk was later removed from the scene by an animal ambulance.
It's not the first time that Swedish elk have gone walkabout. In June The Local reported how children fled the classroom after an elk broke through a window.
In Sweden, it's not unheard of for an elk to wander into towns and get into trouble. In 2011, an elk walked into a home for the elderly in Alingsås. Several Swedish swimming pool owners have woken up to elks stuck in their backyard over the years.
Most famously, an elk that got drunk on fermented apples got stuck in the apple tree.
Moose alert!
My great grandfather was an Elk but he generally used the doorbell.
Three females, one ambulance driver, an older fellow and a dead moose - WTF, over!
Yeah but Ralph Kramden was a Moose and he used his big mouth.
If he was a Rotarian or an Eagle, this would never have happened.
I have a theory.
I was offered to join a Moose Lodge as a charter member some years ago but I really couldn’t afford the time it would have required.
Another great grandfather was in the Oddfellows and my great grandmother was a Rebekah.
I don’t know what made me think of Kramden and Norton as being Mooses (Meese?) but that was a funny show.
I think it’s strange that in those European countries they refer to Moose as Elk but maybe it’s us that are strange. :-)
Cousin Curious was hangin’ out at the Elks’ Lodge. Someone put an ABBA DVD on and Curious fell in love madly with Agnetha and Anni Frida. Someone misled poor Curious into thinking they lived in this house. Curiuos never even got to meet them. Now, Curious is no more! Da*n shame really.
I’ve been to Sweden. I highly recommend it.
Do you know anything about this
Dang, you’re right. Don’t know how I forgot those hats.
I’ll bet it was eating raspberries and got one of those seeds stuck in its teeth and went to the house looking for a toothpick. If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times.
Nicest lady ever. But damn.
I IZ A ELK LOL
See um #12. Cousin Curious: RIP!
