Retail giant Target announced Wednesday that it is asking people not to bring firearms into its stores, even when those stores are located in towns that allow open carry.
Our approach has always been to follow local laws, and of course, we will continue to do so, interim Target CEO John Mulligan said.
But starting today we will also respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target even in communities where it is permitted by law, he said.
Mulligan said Target has spent considerable time weighing this complex issue, but said the chain wants to create an atmosphere that is safe and inviting for our guests and team members.

Agree.
And in Texas, they have to post a sign saying essentially “no guns allowed” per section 30.06 of code xxx. (Yes, its section 30.06!)
They’ve been swing left for years. Hardly anything new. Like me shopping elsewhere forever.
If I’m conceal carrying legal, how will they ever know? Thats the point.
And if the SHTF worse case, what the hell can they do about it?
The law is the law, they can shove their little sign somewhere, sideways.
Always lacking from these wishy-washy PC announcements is the elephant in the store...
Or else what??
?? Has Target had a rash of robberies from citizens carrying in the open? Why would you want to advertise to criminals that you are “open for business?”
From what I understand, they are not going to post. I’m guessing they did this to make MDA shut up, but the policy is the same, they follow local laws.
I love Target. Nice store and nice employees, but unarmed security staff.
I’ve never seen anyone “open carry” in any Target store I’ve been in, and I’ve been in so many that they have a greeter in each one who knows me by name.
My daughter is both an “open carry” and permitted “concealed carry” person. She protects our granddaughter’s school when she can (has some security problems due to its location), and knows how to shoot accurately.
SHe is definitely an asset to have in an emergency.
Target should rethink their statement because it doesn’t make any sense. Most “open carry” people are making a statement about 2nd Amendment Rights, not looking for trouble.
Also, we don’t have a lot of trouble in my neighborhood due to the number of people (often law enforcement officers, who included my son), who are either an “open” or “concealed” carry person. The streets are a lot safer than many other neighbors I know of. Wonder why?
I'm part Indian...and fear that I'm a "target"...and I think the word is racist.
Agreed. But unless they put a sign up prohibiting it, I will CC (would, since I haven't shopped at Target in ages). Which is the law here in KY.
Personally, I am not a fan of open carry just for the sake of "in your face libs". I am legal CCDW and I don't broadcast it, I just as soon keep the element of surprise.
Interestingly, it is notable what stores can do as their right and what they can't. If Target had a bakery, they couldn't [legally] refuse to cater a gay wedding. But they can [legally] refuse entrance (i.e. sell to) legal gun carriers.
Sauce for the goose is not sauce for the gander in fascist PC land. Consistency in the application of the law be damned.
‘course, checking that guide to see if they try to eliminate the 2nd amendment rights of employees by trying to ban firearms in employee vehicles parked on Target property, that's a whole ‘nuther checkpoint as far as I'm concerned.
In the end, Target's politely asking me not to shop there. Okie, like Walmart’s prices anyway.
Doesn’t matter to me. Earlier this year I got a new credit card from my credit union thanks to Target getting hacks and my number being one of the ones compromised. I had to change at least a dozen online automatic bill pay accounts to change the card number.
After that I had already been boycotting Target. Me and my Glock shop elsewhere.
“So plain to me, but they seem to be confounded by the concept that someone coming into to rob/kill/maim is not going to be deterred by your policy not allowing firearms on the premises.”
Deterred?
actually if their intention is to rob/kill/maim this policy will only encourage them to do so as there is an expectation no one will be able to defend themselves.
Nothing makes you safer than telling everyone you’re completely unarmed.
It’s private property, and Target is entitled to make that choice. I will drive the extra mile to Walmart, a safer store where my firearms are welcome and they sell firearms and ammo.
What Target just did was make people going to Target, targets for some whack job to gun customers down and nobody with a gun for defense. But then, there are other stores other than Target to go to. WalMart beats Target hands down.
Target is already floundering.
fu target. they’ve just turned themselves into huge gun-free zone burglary and murder targets.
