Picked the first squash, beans and one tomato this week. Neighbor pulled up most of his onions and gave us a bag full.

Does anyone have a solution for bloom rot on tomatoes? I have several that have black spots where the flower fell off.

Magnesium deficiency in the soil. I use a half handful of epsom salts about 4" under the seedlings that I plant. You can also side dress with epsom salts.

That could be a deficiency in calcium. Add some calcium to the soil. They also make a spray for tomato plants which you can get a home depot or lowes maybe even Walmart. Most of the seed catalogs have them too.

I save egg shells, crushed and sometimes pulverized in the blender. Also some banana peels. I add this stuff to the areas where I am going to plant tomatoes and melons.

Tomatoes and melons need potassium and phosphorus especially during the flowering and setting fruit stages, so I often side dress with a 15-30-15 slow release fertilizer when they begin to flower.

Sometimes there is enough calcium in the soil (to prevent blossom end rot), but the calcium or other micro-nutrients are inaccessible to the plants because of moisture irregularity. Ever since I started mulching tomatoes, I have not had blossom end rot.
