What is a pandemic? According to Flu.gov, a pandemic is defined as a global outbreak of disease. Its not determined by the number of deaths, but by how quickly it spreads.
Do they happen? Pandemics do happen, as in three outbreaks of flu pandemic in the 20th century:
Spanish flu killed $40-50 million in 1918 Asian flu in 1957 killed 2 million people 1 million deaths from Hong Kong flu in 1968 What are the chances?
I dont have a crystal ball, and there is really no way to predict when and how a pandemic can happen. Certain tells would be:
A new virus emerges, which means people would have little or no immunity to it The virus is easily spread to others Virus starts affecting various countries around the globe at the same time. This is not hard to imagine, given the speed of air travel. Outbreaks come in waves.

Keep an eye on the news: Just like with both the MERS virus and the Ebola Virus that are currently making their way around the globe, most pandemics or novel outbreaks will likely start in less developed areas of the world. Start Stockpiling Emergency Supplies: The first thing you need to do, is make sure you have your essential needs covered. In the case of a pandemic, the essentials include water, shelter, food, sanitation, medications, and personal security. During a Pandemic, the less contact you have with others, the better your chances are of staying healthy. Social Distancing is the Key to Avoiding the Outbreak: The best way to improve your chances of staying healthy during a pandemic is to practice social distancing. This means limiting your contact with others, and staying at least 6 feet away from people if you do have to go out. Stay Clean & Practice Good Hygiene: Just like with all person to person disease, the key to prevention lies in good hygiene. Hand washing is obvious, and when used for 30 seconds even a simple alcohol based hand sanitizer, that has between 62 and 75% ethanol, can be enough to kill pretty much any pandemic pathogen. Hospitals & Shelters Should Be Avoided: If youre sick, then by all means you probably need to consult with a medical professional for medical advice. That being said, hospitals will be ground zero in the war and should be avoided if at all possible. Also, if you can, avoid shelters or areas where large groups of people gather, as disease spreads more quickly in those environments.
Preppers’ PING!!
No one is saying that MERS is our own ‘Black Death’, but here is something to think about if just 1% of the population get ill enough to have to seek medical help that is 3,200,000 people what do you think such a surge would do to our medical system?

To be delivered by 'virus carrying' Jihadists?
We have surgical masks and latex gloves as a part of our "kit." Antibiotics too.
Having said that, as a public service announcement, YOU CAN'T HAVE ENOUGH AMMO!
I feel better now.

Spanish flu, Asian flu, Hong Kong flu
I would not travel to those countries.....
Don’t think I haven’t thought about it. It would be easy enough to expose some of these death wishing Jihadist to MERS or even Ebola and send them out as living bio-bombs. Think about it doctors and engineers seem to dominate the command structures of many of the Jihadist groups.
My God. It would be more devastating than ObamaCare!
Most folks don't understand the concept of the Concentric Circles of Survival. The are ordered in accordance with the immediacy of the threat:
1. Weapons and Ammo
2. Shelter
3. Water
4. Medical supplies (from band-aids to disinfectants to anti-diarrheal)
Food.
That is the order in which stocks should be acquired and stored.
Ditto. Does Tamiflu have any effect on the MERS virus?
Just barely!! The Death panels would certainly be working over time!
We’ve accumulated enough of everything to sustain us for a year plus.I can only hope that I’m strong enough and ruthless enough to do the things neccessary for survival.
C'mon, obammy can kill that much on one vacation.
You write some good editorials btw.
Does Tamiflu have any effect on the MERS virus?
As you probably know I am not a doctor or pathologist. So I don't know. Although, I thought that MERS was a bacteria.
Maybe some knowledgeable FReepers will weight in...

One of the scenarios post. 9-11 was
someone isolating the smallpox virus from
burial remains of a victim,
inoculating a few hundred “Vectors”
Send them to the infidels.
Wait for a few weeks...
If you hesitate, you will die.
So will the other folks who are depending on you.
Corona Virus. A common cold on steroids.
My first inclination would be to forego any remedy, shot or treatment the CDC prescribes. In my book, they are a political organization now and with this President, it wouldn’t surprise me if they intended to give me a special “not-my-people Eric Holder shot.”
Don’t trust them, haven’t since the time I mustered out in 76 and they gave me that damned swine flu shot. It screwed me up with pleurisy for 20 years.

There is no treatment yet, though the CDC is discussing developing a vaccine.
If you’re experiencing symptoms, see your doctor.
MERS is resistant to anti-flu drugs like Tamiflu.
