MADISON, Wisconsin (Reuters) - After surviving two long, cold Wisconsin winters on the streets, Betty Ybarra traded freezing park benches and tents for a tiny house made of recycled wood she helped build herself. Her 99-square-foot home, which boasts flower window boxes, was built by volunteers of the Occupy Madison group, as part of about a half dozen similar projects around the United States, including in New York and Texas, to shelter the homeless. "We can check on our flowers and we can now try to live a normal life," said Ybarra, 49, who shares her new home with her friend Chris Derrick, 55, who had also been homeless.

Tiny Houses for Homeless. In this Jan. 16, 2014 photo Betty Ybarra, 48, stands outside a tiny houses she and her boyfriend live in, in Madison, Wis.
Ybarra? Sounds hispanic. The only homeless I ever see are white or black. No asians either.
What do Ybarra and Chris do for work? The article failed to mention what their job occupations were.
Ybarra is a surname of Basque origin, and may refer to: Javier Ybarra Bergé, Basque industrialist, writer, and politician; Jason Ybarra, American actor, stuntman
It’s a nice idea, and good luck to them. But I think they’ll find that their “village” will soon turn into a cesspool of drugs, theft, and filth. Folks who are homeless for any length of time usually seem to have addictions and/or mental problems.
This is a PROGRAM that’s gonna work!!!!! (SARC)
This picture reminds me of a barrio in Bogota, Colombia, although these hovels look more upscale than the ones I saw there. Where was this picture taken?
Interesting to see all the satellite dishes in this pix.
Homeless is a full time occupation. Note the PU truck, which I will assume is theirs. (Some LEO please run the plate to confirm.) 99% of these citizens are happy with their homeless occupation. The Peoples Republic of Madisonstan has just built a village with a RAT voting booth in the next 99 sqft home. Oh joy to the homeless world.
Wonder what property taxes she pays.
Satellite/Dish TV sure has a lot of customers don’t they. Makes you wonder who’s paying for that.?
I like that. Of course my dream is to live on a boat. Just can’t talk hubby into it. lol
Just wait until someone sues because it doesn't meet the standards of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Before you know it these cubicles will have to have 3000 sq. ft. of space to accommodate wheel chairs.
Just watch.
Venezuela. I was just looking for a picture that would illustrate what is to come.
The assumption is always that the ‘homeless’ want off the streets. Study after study has shown that the vast majority of folks living on the streets have substance abuse problems and/or mental health issues. Most do not want help.
For those who want help there are plenty of programs out there.
