Full Title: FEC chair warns that conservative media like Drudge Report and Sean Hannity face regulation --- like PACs Government officials, reacting to the growing voice of conservative news outlets, especially on the internet, are angling to curtail the media's exemption from federal election laws governing political organizations, a potentially chilling intervention that the chairman of the Federal Election Commission is vowing to fight.
Sign Up for the Paul Bedard newsletter! I think that there are impulses in the government every day to second guess and look into the editorial decisions of conservative publishers, warned Federal Election Commission Chairman Lee E. Goodman in an interview.
The right has begun to break the lefts media monopoly, particularly through new media outlets like the internet, and I sense that some on the left are starting to rethink the breadth of the media exemption and internet communications, he added.
Noting the success of sites like the Drudge Report, Goodman said that protecting conservative media, especially those on the internet, matters to me because I see the future going to the democratization of media largely through the internet. They can compete with the big boys now, and I have seen storm clouds that the second you start to regulate them, there is at least the possibility or indeed proclivity for selective enforcement, so we need to keep the media free and the internet free.
All media has long benefited from an exemption from FEC rules, thereby allowing outlets to pick favorites in elections and promote them without any limits or disclosure requirements like political action committees.

I THOUGHT they had hit bottom but they continue to dig!
I think that sumbich needs a blanket party myself.
I thought they were trying to outlaw bullying. Oh, dang. I must still be drivin’ the wrong way on the one way street of pc/diversity.
Using that “reasoning”, ABC,CBS, NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, NPR, PBS, can expect similar scrutiny....right?
There is no bottom to an abyss no matter how long they dig. Or so it seems.
Personally, if it were me (Drudge) and the rumors about being light in the loafers were true, I’d yell GAY HATERS as loud as I could and get THE GAYS (you gotta say like the Chicagoans say THE BEARS) on my side.... I’d do the circle roundhouse snap on their azz.
The fascists want to control everything, including our thoughts.
Funny the left dosen’t understand that DRUDGE REPORT is not a reporting site or news publisher, it is a news aggregator.
They would have to go regulate the long list he links from, including FR to do anything, LOL.
Some Democrat Congressman had actually proposed a law FORCING Drudge to post left-wing links in order to provide “balance”.
So now that the media is no longer "lockstep". Now that the other side gets to broadcast their own "equal time" response to the issues of the day, NOW there must be legislation?
After a liberal debate moderator lied on behalf of Mr. Obama in a presidential debate?
Now that the media has been caught in collusion with the Obama administration lying about what really happened on 9-11-2012 to minimize the terrorist attack's effect on his re-election campaign?
FUFEC
If Salon isn’t a PAC, I don’t know what is. It long ago ceased to be traded on the stock exchange and it became a money pit for liberals to contribute to keeping it operational.
I guess the ‘RAT Nazi and commie propaganda sites are okay though. America! It’s time to start putting some of these public servants in prison. They’ve been ripping off the American taxpayers long enough.
And so it begins. This is why you vote for the milquetoast Republican who can win.
