Raising a worldwide alarm, the World Health Organization announced Monday that spread of polio is an international public health emergency that could grow in the next few months and unravel the nearly three-decade effort to eradicate the crippling disease. [ ]
Polio usually strikes children under five and is most often spread via infected water. There is no specific cure, but several vaccines exist.
Experts are particularly concerned that the virus continues to pop up in countries that were previously free of the disease, such as Syria, Somalia and Iraqwhere civil war or unrest complicates efforts to contain the virus. That spread has happened during the traditionally low season for polio spreading, leaving experts worried that cases could spike in the coming months.

Open borders mean that viruses “got rights” too!
I really, really hope our Arab and Islamic friends aren’t planning to partake of any innoculation against Polio; whether by needle or by sugar cube. Because those medications were invented by Jews.
Correct: both Salk and Sabin.
We worked as hard as we could for the March of Dimes, selling salt and filling those little cards with dimes.
A few years later, I remember us all lined up in the hall of the school..waiting for our dose of the vaccine.
It’s a miracle that with all of the wars and natural disasters, people living in refugee camps, invaders crossing national borders with minimal restriction and mercenary soldiers always on the move that there hasn’t been a really horrific outspread of diseasy by now.
You must be my age group. We had several girls in my high school with braces too.
I’ve often wondered if the girls( as opposed to boys) have something in their systems that makes them survive instead of dying of the disease.
Of course some famous men, like FDR and Alan Alda, have had polio so maybe it’s a coincidence.
“Man you know you’re in trouble plenty.”
I was teaching 1st grade in Boston in the 1954-55 school year and the entire class got the Salk vaccine.
It was also the school year that “under God” was introduced in the pledge.
An unusual school year.

I'm 70. I'm sure there are all kinds of stats around.

Ping!
My late mother in law had to wear a leg brace because of polio.
I remember my mother taking us to a big room (probably a school gym) when I was 4, to get the sugar cube vaccine back in the early 1960s.
Polio is a nasty disease. I pray that it does not get reintroduced into the U.S. Idiots like Jenny McCarthy with their anti-vaccination campaigns are directly responsible for the fact that 5-10% of our kids are not protected, and could easily become reservoirs for this horrible disease.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
I was one of the test subjects for the original polio vaccine.
