Waffles Cafe has been "inundated" with requests since a "wonut," a waffle-doughnut hybrid, went viral. Wonut LAKEVIEW A local breakfast joint might just have invented the next cronut.
Waffles Cafe debuted a "wonut," or waffle doughnut, and after word of it spread via international media this week, the cafe has been "inundated with customers," said owner Alex Hernandez's mother, who picked up the phone at the Lakeview location, 3611 N. Broadway.
She said Hernandez would be returning the flurry of media calls later in the day.
"The press is beautiful, but we need to service the customers," she said.
The wonut is what it sounds like a mini-waffle deep fried and then covered in glaze, sprinkles or other toppings more typical of a doughnut than a waffle. Flavors include sugar, marshmallow, maple, green tea and Mexican chocolate.
The cafe has been selling them for months now, but a recent spotlight from Thrillist went viral on sites from feminist blog Jezebel to British tabloid Daily Mail.
"We can all just die happy now, because LOOK AT THAT F-----G PICTURE," Jezebel declared. "Humanity is never topping this."
Waffles is known for its creative breakfast fare. Beyond the new wonut, the cafe has experimented with waffles in all different breakfast forms, from waffle benedicts to green tea-flavored waffles.
And that's just counting requests from the police department.
Needs a side of bacon and a cup of coffee.
I still like “Drunkin Donuts” (www.thedrunkindonut.com)
The Chicago cops like them so much, they didn’t shoot his dog.

There is very little in the world of donuts, that can replace a donut filled with Bavarian Cream/Creme.
A ‘waffle’ is technically pressed flat, so I believe I am quite safe in saying that ‘you can’t touch that!’
Where’s the peanut butter for the toast?
and turn your pistol over or move it to the left side of the dishes!
My sugar is up 20 points just looking at that.
