SOME of us may have tried it out of curiosity, others by accident after a few beers.
And then there are those of us who have eaten dog food because our siblings may have forced us to.
But food blogger Colin McQuistan had none of those excuses and simply decided to try the animal food just for the heck of it.
And while pet food clearly warns on the label that it should not be eaten by humans, Mr McQuistan was determined to try it. The good news is he lived to tell the, er, tail.
The Scotsman, who is no stranger to using weird and wacky ingredients in his cooking, visited his local Tesco supermarket looking for tinned tomatoes when he came across a packet of Purina DeliBakie Dog Snacks.
The author of myfoodeeblog said he was curious what they tasted like and tried one which he described as disgusting and bland but with a background flavour of meat which is strong, overpowering, sinister and evil.
He was then on a mission to try to make the dog treat edible.
Mr McQuistan, who began his food blog as part of a one-man protest against food snobs, is prepared to cook and try anything within reason.

This has ranged from cat food and grass to toothpaste and even fish food.
But his latest challenge to make dog food edible was among his toughest, and proved not all food is quite that easy to swallow.
So what did he do?
A Facebook follower suggested he make something similar to hobnobs, a popular British biscuit.
He began by crushing the treats into a bowl and adding a random amount of sugar and butter.
Mr McQuistan then transferred it to biscuit moulds and set his professional chefs oven to 180 degrees for around 20 minutes.

A clear failure.
The sugar and butter have done well to mask the strange meat flavour, and to begin with they just taste like sweet biscuits, he writes.
But sure enough, after a few moments you are hit with that strange taste and I feel quite ill. Having said that, they taste better than the original treat.
It wouldnt be the first time Mr McQuistan has had a food fail with animal delights.
Last year, he made a cat food stir fry which was horrendous and even tried making fish food fit for human tastebuds.
More recently, he posted a hilarious entry detailing the delightful and not so delightful aspects of food at 40,000ft when flying from London to the US, which he admitted he was pleasantly surprised by.
Moral to the story? Dont eat dog food. Such a simple but valuable lesson.
I bet adding a generous drenching of Sriracha would work. I invite someone else to try.
I knew a teenage girl who went on a Gravy Train Dog Food diet decades ago. The whole seventh grade knew about it. Supposedly, her parents never found out why the food was being used up so quickly. And no, she didn’t lose weight. I believe she gained a few pounds just before the week the week to pose for class photos.
I have a grocery store near me that discounts it’s cuts of meat the day of the ‘sell by’ date. That’s as far as I get for edible dog food for humans. 1/2 cup of cubed beef or chicken or pork, 2-3 tablespoons of brown rice or diced cooked potato, 1-2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin or yams and a bit of salad greens that I usually have near spoiling point in the fridge. It’s cheaper than $1 a day for a medium semi-active dog.
Other than that, he always eats a portion of what I eat. Eggs and cottage cheese for breakfast, popcorn or Tortilla chips with a bit of fruit for lunch.
But she had a healthy coat!
How much weight did her dog lose?
Sriracha would work for most but just to be sure, try the Thai approach to steamed fish. Pound together about two cups prick kee nu chilies with two cups garlic, mix in some shrimp paste and cilantro. Steam the topping with the dead fish. It won’t kill you but you’ll wish it had.

When it gets real dry dog or cat food may be the difference between life and death.
She shared a jumbo bag with Maxine, her German Shepherd. The student would use an empty metal popcorn tin with a lid, and fill it up with her portion when the bag was first opened. Thee container was stored in her room, ‘off limits’ to the rest of the family. Maxine was the girl’s repsonsibility to feed, brush and walk.
Heaven help you if you consume anything for pets from China.
I do some consulting work for a couple of pet food manufacturers. They basically use the same equipment and follow the same hygiene rules of a plant packing food for human consumption. The only difference is the ingredients. I have to say watching a guy grind a 2000 pound block of frozen lamb lungs and kidneys is enough to ruin your appetite.
The guys at the firehouse my father worked at made a dog food meatloaf for one of the other fireman. The meatloaf was made of Gains Burger and chop meat. The guy ended up eating more then one piece and he thought it tasted good. The same guy brought a sandwich to work that his wife made for him. When he opened it up there was a dead mouse between the bread. He did something that made her mad at him. I guess dog food would taste good with a wife like that cooking for you.
Have you tried Darksheare’s coffee?
Wow. I thought the wife was suposed to be your best. friend! NOT!
!!!
Umm.. I’m willing to bet “no” and that might be a good thing.
On more than one occasion a few of us ate Milk Bones as both a dare and the fact that you couldn’t leave the plant in the middle of the night to get food for fear of being killed. This was in Buffalo.
She’s an ex wife now. The guy was a nice guy but he was real goofy. His wife was mean and crazy. One day she was rubbing the top of his head while he was sitting at the kitchen table. He didn’t realize that she was using a dirty diaper until the smell hit him. My father was shocked that she did it, especially with other people in the house.
