8.3 earth quake Solomon Islands tsunami warning issued 1437 UTC
2014 UTC
I’ve been watching activity in that area this weekend via the Earthquake 3D app I downloaded a few weeks ago. This one was pretty shallow too.
Yike !!!!!!
noticed yesterday there were quite a few quakes in that area.
I was just defending on FR the notion that there’s an earthquake swarm.
A 8.3 magnitude earthquake occurred 67.11mi SSE of Kirakira, Solomon Islands. Details: http://t.co/EMWLJFuPgq Map: http://t.co/3boKmfG2Xw— Earthquake Robot (@earthquakeBot) April 12, 2014
That is a big one!
8.3 is a big ‘un.
No joke. Someone felt that one.
Earthquakes do only seem to swarm here on Earth
wasn’t there just a 6.7 one a couple of hours ago??
6 of the 13 largest earthquakes between of the last century happened in the last 10 years. 6 more happened between 1951 and 1965. That’s 12 out of 13 happening in one of two stretches totaling 24 years.
That’s a stronger grouping than can be explained by the fallacy of the “Texas sharpshooter”, and while geologists are unsure of the reason, they do acknowledge the statistical groupings.

USGS is now saying this was a 7.6. Is it just me, or is that a major difference?
The Richter scale is logarithmic, meaning that whole-number jumps indicate a tenfold increase. In this case, the increase is in wave amplitude. That is, the wave amplitude in a level 6 earthquake is 10 times greater than in a level 5 earthquake, and the amplitude increases 100 times between a level 7 earthquake and a level 9 earthquake. The amount of energy released increases 31.7 times between whole number values.
too ba dit wasn’t under the g-d white house. or wherever the hell piece’of land obama was currently on top of.
The Russians gave it a 6.9
Was that on the Putin Scale of Bad@ssness?
Thank you. I just meant it seemed a large downgrade.
