Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office asked for help with feral hogs eating up West Bank levees

Feral hogs continue to feast on West Bank levees, prompting the authority responsible for 100 miles of flood protection to seek help from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Major damage has been reported along the V-line levee south of Marrero as well as to structures in Jean Lafitte National and Bayou Segnette State parks.

"It's a lot of work to keep repairing the same thing three days later. You go back out there and they tear it up. It's costing the parish a lot of money,'' Chris Muscarello, operations superintendent of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Authority-West said.

In the worst-case scenarios, the hogs have caused as much as 25 percent damage to the levees, management and technical consultant Bill Fogle said.

The authority sought help from the U.S. Department of Agriculture last fall in determining the size of the hog population. But levee officials said the state is trying to coordinate control efforts with the agriculture department and that a pilot project is underway in which the west authority could benefit.

Besides the sheriff's deputies, Fogle said another option is a company that uses dogs to round up the boars, at $20 per head.

Pigs are getting bad here. A law was recently passed allowing the hunting of pigs from helicopters.

Pigs have been spotted in neighborhoods in the city of Slidell. One thing pit bulls are good for is hunting wild pigs.

I’ve seen pigs in Slidell. LOL! On the other hand, I did meet my beautiful wife there. On a more serious note, those pigs can cause a lot of damage in a pretty short time. And they repro like crazy. And they be’s dangeroux too. You sure don’t want to smack one with your car either. They were a serious problem at KSC who hired a hunter to come in and take some out. Tough to do since KSC is a nature preserve. PETA alert.

“Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office asked for help with feral hogs eating up West Bank levees”

Dress up like a bunch of mall ninjas in your finest tacticool gear, hop in your MRAPs and pretend that the hogs are really dogs. Problem solved.

With the number of hunters in Louisiana allowing them to be hunted/trapped year round would be effective.

Most environmentalists do not like hogs because there are few critters who do more damage to an eco-system and they are not natural to the area. They also spread disease that damage native animal populations and destroy native plants.

I have several friends in north La. who have acreage being constantly torn up by pigs. They trap them and kill them. I’ve suggested putting gps on a couple and releasing them. Then have a hunting party ready next time they’re coming by.

The feral hogs are out of control here too-they decimate gardens that are not fenced, and trample crops-but it is nothing like what I read about in that article.

They are bad tempered, big and dangerous, too-they don’t hesitate at going after a human.

Just about everyone who can get a place to do so hunts them-
a few years ago, some farmers with an eye for free meat started trapping those hogs, too.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has hired marksmen to shoot feral hogs
from helicopters flying over two wildlife management areas in south Louisiana.

Spokesman Bo Boehringer says he’s been told one helicopter squad can kill as many
as 300 hogs in a day. Officials estimate there are more than half a million feral
hogs loose in Louisiana.

I remember years ago nutria were tearing up the levees in Jefferson Parish. Harry Lee was the sheriff at the time and he sent his SWAT team out at night armed with .22’s and night vision.

Reminds me of the old Miss Emily skits by Gilda Radner on SNL. She would go on and on about people participating in child abuse until some one would correct her and she’d reply “Never mind”
Fedral Hogs would have made a great skit.
