Beta Max failed in the home market, but it whipped other formats in the professional, commercial market, and was in use until digital media went mainstream.

Beta Max!I paid $750 in 1978 dollars for a demo of that unit from May Co. Damn thing weighed over 50 pounds. It blew my neighbors minds - for a while. It soon became evident that the one-hour taping limit was a killer even though the 2-hour VHS picture was of a lesser quality. Oh yeah, the tapes were something like $30 each.
