The Closing of the American Mind is a 1987 book by Allan Bloom. It describes "how higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today's students." He focuses especially upon the "openness" of relativism as leading paradoxically to the great "closing" referenced in the book's title. Bloom argues that "openness" and absolute understanding undermines critical thinking and eliminates the "point of view" that defines cultures.

he Closing of the American Mind is a critique of the contemporary university and how Bloom sees it as failing its students. In it, Bloom criticizes the modern movements in philosophy and the humanities. Philosophy professors involved in ordinary language analysis or logical positivism disregard important "humanizing" ethical and political issues and fail to pique the interest of students.[1] Literature professors involved in deconstructionism promote irrationalism and skepticism of standards of truth and thereby dissolve the moral imperatives which are communicated through genuine philosophy and which elevate and broaden the intellects of those who engage with these imperatives.

It is because proper grammar, spelling, and pronunciation as well as basic math skills are now regarded as “racist”!

1 word: TEXTING

It corrects spelling, adds in colons and periods automatically, it encourages short, incorrectly spelled words.

Simple answer: 80% of the people in college have no business being in college. They don’t have the intellectual background, they don’t have the intellectual skills. They cannot read, write, or compute at college-entry level, nor have they any understanding of logic, ethics, literature, the classical arts, or the basics of chemistry or physics. And I say this as an online instructor who would be in the poorhouse if they all ever came to their senses and gave up trying to be college graduates.

According to the commie ‘RATS, they don’t need to know how to read and write. They’ve got “smart” phones to do that for them. ROTFL!

The key to writing correctly is writing that is corrected. Starting in the sixth grade, the pupil should be required to hand write a 150 word essay every day, with the length of the essay increased at every grade level. If a word is misspelled, or there is a grammatical error, the error should be pointed out and the pupil required to find the correct word, then re-write the essay with the error corrected. This forces the pupil to look up any words or grammatical constructions he is not completely sure of.

Sad to say, this professor who ostensibly is teaching college students does not have top-notch writing skills himself. Subject-verb disagreement and ending sentences with a preposition are just a couple of the mistakes I see. Each generation of teachers teaches the next, and they get worse and worse over time.

On the positive side, maybe I won’t be forced out of the workforce in 20 years when I’m unable to retire. This old geezer will look pretty good compared to the illiterates we’re producing.

Today’s publik skul system are teaching students WHAT to think instead of HOW to think and HOW to write.

The author is right, but you know what I notice?

Conservatives are generally older, and seasoned Conservatives PUSH YOUNG PEOPLE AWAY, very, very sharply:

Yes, the focus here is on the terrible writing habits of young people. I understand that. But honestly, I really think when we see these huge, pessimistic gripe sessions it’s a form of indulgence that does not serve conservativism well at all:

Libs scoop up these deluded young people, give them a home and thereby enjoy the service of rank-and-file ground troops for DECADES.

I really don’t think young people abhor the underlying ideas of small government at all, but the only friendly ideological leaders young people are exposed to are in movies and school, and both of those are very strongly dominated by Destroyers of Culture.

They finally get a little contact with people who could genuinely HELP them, and they get haranguing and the stiff-arm.

I think the only outreach I see to the young are at Church and in Rush’s new books.

That’s it.

Correct them, but don’t harangue or alienate —IF you really want to help the country.

i had an english teacher in 12th grade (1968-1969) he did not like to teach grammar BUT he knew how important it was so he was able to boil it down to 1 week of intense focus. after that it was all critical thinking and writing and punctuation, grammar, and spelling counted. a great argument presented with poor all of them would take an A to a C-. his feeling basically "how well you think isn't worth a damn if you can't present it well.p>

Writing is “thinking” on paper; if one has no real thoughts, he is unlikely to be able to fill up a readable page. And most of the American people can’t write much more than a grocery list.

When I was an assistant at Fordham in 1977, the students were unable to write, or think. The professor I assisted had taken to handing out the answers to his ESSAY questions. That’s right. He wrote essays and gave them out. The students were graded on whether they were able to regurgitate something resembling an essay. Most of them weren’t.

And yet, during the almost 40 years since then, I’ve been reading articles that decry the precipitous decline in student literacy since “five years ago.”

The government schools have been succeeding for over 100 years in turning out illiterates. And they have been getting more and more and more successful all the time.

The “low-information voter” is PRECISELY what Horace Mann, Andrew Carnegie, John Dewey, J.D. Rockefeller, et al., WANTED to produce by imposing government schooling on America.
