NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. electronics chain RadioShack Corp is planning to close about 500 stores within months, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Weird timing after a very good Super Bowl ad. I thought they’d follow with some news about changes in their stores...not this.
I’m surprised it took this long.
They should have died 10 years ago.
Like the Super Bowl ad said - the 80s called and they want their Radio Shack back.
It’s almost useless to go there... They used to have lots of IC’s and components, but not anymore.
Lot of great memories from my DXing days.
I haven’t found much use for RS in many years. I’m surprised it has lasted as long it has.
(FWIW, Radio Shack was already passe in the 80s)
... and their employees are cluless about the components side. I was trying to get them to recommend a relay or something, and got only blank stares.
Lafeyette, Allied, Heathkit.
Mama.
What happened?
What the h3ll happened?
Steve McQueen, The Sand Pebbles.
What happened?
Everything changed.
Today few can do.
I know. I don't know if the market for that dried up. But I've wondered how long a "me too" "Sell phones like everyone else" business model would hold up.
I would think the component market would be expanding again with all the interest in robotics and makers.
Looks like the 80s have come to collect :)
But you can buy a cell phone contract and ear bud there.
And pretty much everything else.
I loved the old radio shack very few places to buy stuff like that I have a place in fullerton Ford Radio that has lots of stuff than good ness i do recall the battery club card that was kinda fun
As the joke says, “try and find the radio”.
Remember back in the day when they wanted your address if you bought anything? Even batteries?
Rumor floating around was that they were required to report your component purchases to the FCC if it looked as if you were in the process of building a pirate radio station.
Thank God for DigiKey..........
The last three times I was in Radio Shack, they did not have what I was looking for.
A really weird mix of items if you ask me. A lot of Chinese junk.

I guess whatever they were they were well before my time. And I’m 55 years old.
