Explanation: Welcome to The World At Night. Sharing the night sky seen around the world, this view from Monument Valley, USA includes a picturesque foreground of famous buttes. Buttes are composed of hard rock left behind after water eroded away the surrounding soft rock. The two buttes on the image left are known as the Mittens, while Merrick Butte is on the right. Recorded in 2007 December, planet Mars is at the left of the skyscape, a glowing beacon of orange that is the brightest object in the frame. To the right of Mars lies the constellation of Orion. Betelgeuse is the reddish star near the center and the Belt of Orion and the Orion Nebula are farther right. Finally, the bright blue star Rigel appears above Merrick Butte in this stunning view of The World At Night.

Guess I’ll go for a walk and look for that
..
That picture was from 2007. Right now Jupiter is pretty close to where Mars was in that picture.
My favorite constellation. Will be too low in the sky in my area the northeast by April so see Orion while you can.
Oh
Thought this was done east coast time tonight.
That is BEAUTIFUL.
Mars opposition to Earth is 8APR2014.
Closest approach is 14APR2014.
UFO reports always increase when Mars is closest to Earth for some weird reason.
Got to wonder if Betelgeuse still exists as a star, real time, at its location approx 650 lightyears away.
One of the worst things about living in the big city is that you can’t see many stars.
Can’t turn out those streetlights though, crime would double.
You’re right about that. I remember going to 6th grade camp up in the mountains in San Diego County and being completely amazed by the number of stars I could clearly see!
Fortunately, despite living in a city, I can see the stars so long as it is clear out. I frequently see Orion’s Belt.
Wow!!
