On Thursday, Major League Baseball formally approved the use of instant replay for the 2014 season. Under the new system, managers will have one challenge they can use. If their challenge is successful, managers will be able to retain that challenge and use it one more time during the game for a maximum of two challenges per game.
After the start of the seventh inning, the crew chief of the game may choose to use instant replay on any reviewable call even if a manager is out of challenges, according to Major League Baseball's announcement:

I hate it.
So end baseball.
Baseball really should be electronically officiated, there’s nothing going on in the game that couldn’t be handled with RFIDs, pressure sensors, and Hawk-Eyes. Then there’d be no need for reviews, and they could fire most of their terrible umps.
Joe West being on the top of the list to be fired first!!!
They’ve done the impossible....come up with a replay rule that is even more screwed-up than the NFL’s.
As if three hours isn’t long enough for a baseball game.
I like it, so many bad calls.
I think the crew chief should be able to challenge any call though not just after the 7th inning, runs scored or not scored in the first inning count just as much as any other.
Will push average game times to over 4 hours.
I agree. It takes something away from the game.
Agree, but are all MLB games going to become 4 hour marathons? Every game becoming BOS-NYY isn’t a positive.
My guess is there will be very few challenges made by managers. I’m thinking the repercussions of showing up and ump won’t be worth one or two overturned calls.
Good,
Nothing ruins the game more than your team losing over a bad call. Ask the fans of the 1985 Cardinals.
I don’t blame the umps for bad calls, they are human, the game is very fast and I am amazed they don’t make even more mistakes.
However, this system SUXXXXXX.
Football’s IR has become a game with in the game, Baseball should be like Hockey and have another ump in booth that can over ride calls as need be.
Good point.
Have you ever seen what Curt Shilling thinks of that?
Let’s shoot for 12 hours...just like cricket!
I doubt it, because the first question any manager would get with the press is “Why didn’t you challenge that play?”.
Football coaches don’t worry about Refs taking it out on them, and refs in football have a lot more lee-way in what they call or not
He is now back in the minors and his one shot at making the history books was thrown away by Jim Joyce not doing his job.
Personally I like the idea of electronic umpires. The human ones even when they are paying attention tend to be erratic in their calls.
Three hours? Last season the AZ Diamondbacks played 78 extra innings. And my FIL watched every stinking game they played. I was rooting for them to NOT make the playoffs so I could shut the TV off for a few months.
