Some do. Some try, and do pretty well, but they’re nearsighted, and you can see them squinting and sniffing.
What did the dog that Obama ate thought as he was being eaten by the future Alinsky POTUS?
Probably somewhat deflating when you set your 8 x 11 glossy in front of Fido, and he lifts up his leg and takes a whizz on it...
M00-chelle recognizes Buttcrack with a picture, so what?
Our cat can recognize the sound of our approaching vehicles and arrange to be at the back door just in time to get in and hit the food dish. (The dog is almost always in the vehicle when a vehicle is on a “trip”- but if asked about various people and dog buddies by name will go to the house windows to see if they have really shown up to have a love-in.)
Not to forget voices, and the inflection in that voice.
Maybe they just recognize your scent in the photo.
My current pup will look behind a mirror if possible. It fascinates him. The cat feels as though mere representations are beneath her, she demands the original.
When I was 20, my Dobermann watched a horse crack my head open 500 yards away.
He then watched the ambulance come and haul me off.
He was going berserk the whole time I was in his sight.
While I was in a coma for 11 days, my gramma said he sat staring at the last place he saw me, howling mournfully.
She knew I’d woken up when he suddenly stopped howling.
She said he then abandoned his place of sorrowful vigil and went to the front door of his kennel and *waited*, instead.
I didn’t actually get home for another 5 hours but he was there jumping, wagging and crying with happiness when I pulled in the driveway.
Dogs are more than we know.
By the way I had a dog who was blind and deaf for about the last 5 or so years of its life (which was 18 total). Even after I’d been away for a month or so at a time, it could still recognize me, so scent must play a chief role in their recognition.
Dogs can have phenomenal memories for that which really interests them.
They absolutely do.
This is nice to know info for non-dog owners!! Dog owners have suspected this for years!!! My only question is, would these scientists have done this study if they were working on their own, or for a for profit making entity rather than on the the givernment for?
Waait a minute, I thought dogs couldn’t see one dimensional images. I call foul. They may react to TV, but they cannot see it. They cannot see pictures either.
As for them recognizing you a long way off, they have a remarkable sense of smell and hearing. Dogs can find carion a long way off. Coyotes and wolves and some dogs can hear rodents under ground or under snow.
Animals see the world differently. This anthropomorphising needs to stop.
I have 6 watchracoons, 2 skunks, one possum, and a fisher that recognize me by sound of my walk at night & they can see in the dark. They lay out on the porch and guard the house against all trespassers at various times during the night,, but in wintertime they are utterly useless as watchcoons, watchskunks, etc....
I doubt that. My dog barks at other dogs on tv, she barks at her own picture on the computer. I don’t think she recognizes anything or anyone.
Mine knows when ill be home minutes before I pull in the drive according to my wife. I rarely come home at the same time. He also knows the differance in delivery trucks when he knows one is coming. The ups guy gives him pets and treats so he pops up and runs to the door happy a minute or two before the truck pulls up.. the FedEx guy won’t touch him or give him a treat. When he knows that guy is coming he barks twice at the door and goes back to sleep. I am sure he knows our vehicles by sounds but the ups guy had a van the other day instead of the big truck. He still knew he was coming. He also seems to know its not the normal driver. He does not get near as excited.
He is a hound so maybe his nose is that good.
I’ve had a few dogs...then I got German Shepherd.
My 11 year old cocker recognizes my daughter’s voice even over Facetime. She runs to the door barking and looking for her.
