How a century of breeding 'improvement' has turned once-healthy dogs into deformed animals
UK Daily Mail ^ | December 6, 2013 | Ted Thornhill

The common perception of purebred dogs is that they are more striking, beautiful animals than they would be without human intervention. However, that notion has been thrown to the dogs. Strong photographic evidence has emerged that shows how 100 years of breeding has actually warped the good looks of the original hounds.

See photos contrasting what some breeds looked like 100 years ago to today. The Bulldog is a walking genetic disaster; the Hapsburgs of dogs.

Just looks like, to my untrained eye, the difference between slim and well/over-fed dogs, with the exception being the Bull Terrier’s head.

Do a search on “Leavitt Bulldog” for breeders who are trying to bring back the bulldog as he once was. They are lovely animals.

As rescuer of a Boxer, I think they look better now.

The bull terrier’s head is horrific. The daschund looks like its back is going to cave in.

Every dog owner is guilty of animal abuse.

There is a group attempting to bring the bulldog back.

Madam, now 10, is an old English bulldog and she looks much more like the first picture.

(Wonderful personality & smart, but stubborn and bit bossy - best dog I've ever had)

Modern Shepherd with sloping back and poor chest looks deformed and is quite a comparison to the straight backed shepherds of 100 years ago.

Breeding for appearance. It does a dog bad.

I also think that today’s Boxer is a better looking breed. The bulldog is not. I’m glad they started breeding them in color instead of black & white though. lol

Shiba Inu dogs still look fine (I've got one). Some Siamese cats, though, what's up with the wedge heads?

Cockers aren’t near the beautiful animals that they once were, either.

Hurray for the Border Collie breeders (not the ones that joined the AKC).

What does anyone want to bet that 90%, or more, of show dog breeders vote Democrat, Socialist, Labour, or further left?

Maybe I’m going out on a limb here, but I’ll bet most pitbull breeders voted for Obama. Just saying.

The “modern” hybrid dogs are definitely different than the “older” species dogs, visually. Genetically, no doubt.

Their lifespans/diseases comparison would be an interesting chart, but records on the older, species canines probably weren’t kept very carefully, and the article does mention more disease problems, probably indicating shorter lives for the new hybrids. Just guessing.

This is just anecdotal, but our well bred, expensive, good bloodlines Lab is a neurotic mess (albeit pretty), while our little mutt, a mix of breeds known fornervous behavior is smart, calm, and sweet. My husband said not only did he not know he could like a little dog, but she is his favorite dog ever.
