Not sure the water thing is really accurate. Bottled water is certainly good for much longer than 3 months. Sure you shouldn’t use non-food grade containers or store in a way that encourages mold growth.
Never use milk jugs to store water. As I’ve heard.

That is wrong about water. Mine is in clear heavy duty plastic Ozarka jugs but they are in cool darkness. Put any stored water through a Berkey to be on the safe side if you have stored it for a number of years and you have pure water but it should be pure anyway if it has been kept cool and away from light.
I buy some fresh every year when hurricane season approaches - still in the Ozarka jugs that stack on each other.
The water I buy has a use by date stamped on it, and it is generally good for a year. I only keep about 25 gallons of bottled water because we have a well, and two back up generators that can be used to run the pump.
Our holding tank is 30 gallons, and the water heater is 50 gallons.
We also have a bunch of rainwater that we could treat if we needed to, and I have the treatment and filtering materials to do so.
I’ve had jugs of water stashed in the woods for years. It’s fine.
