A hiker was rescued after surviving a bear attack and spending three months, exposed to snow and freezing temperatures, in a remote corner of northern Canada, police said.
Police located Marco Lavoie, 44, in the wilderness near Waskaganish, Quebec, on Wednesday, 10 days after his family reported him missing and nearly a month after the experienced outdoorsman was expected to return from a two month hiking expedition.
Police believe Lavoie survived the bear attack uninjured, sometime in August, when his German shepherd got in between the man and the bear, Sgt. Ronald McInnis, spokesman for the Quebec Provincial Police told ABCNews.com.

There are some good lessons in both what to do and what not to do from the incident at Missinaibi Provincial Park with Dr. Jacqueline Perry. I personally remember 2 other bear attacks that resulted in 3 deaths in Algonquin Provincial Park.

You bet! - He can hear my car keys jingle from two blocks away.
COULD be another of Obama’s sons.
He eats dog!
They do make bear canisters, and some hiking food is known for not being that attractive to bears. I realize if he planned to stay for a month he could not pack enough canisters due to weight- so would likely have to set up a base camp of sorts and circle back to replenish from a canister stash. Keeping food from bears is not easy but many manage to do it. I have a cousin that used to guide hunters for Kodiak bears and he knew many tricks since you don’t want to cross those bears for sure.
As I see it the worst mistake he made was not being armed, and I realize legally that may not have been allowed- but if not I wouldn’t have went to begin with. I used to spend a lot of time in the great outdoors and would not have considered going where I couldn’t be armed. Too many critters to deal with in different climates- not to mention every once in a while someone encounters people that are bad news.
Your points are well taken.
I’m pretty sure it happened in NW Canada, and the lost hiker was from Quebec.
The 1972 Andean plane crash and Donner Party come to mind.....I’m sure there are more.
I love that movie.
I am pretty experienced. I done a lot of adventure things. I would never walk two months through a wilderness without a sat phone or rescue beacon.
I know a lot of people poo poo high tech stuff. I still shoot film cameras. But sometimes walking into the wilderness like that is just stupid.
Yay! Someone recognized the quote!
WWSD?
Ping-a-woof
She sure as hell wouldn’t eat her dog, that’s what.
In my wildest nightmare....I couldn’t imagine doing such a thing. There’s a scsred trust that could not be broken.
