Is anyone else getting signs of a bad winter coming? This year’s nutfall has been ridiculous, I filled a grocery bag full of hickory nuts while practically sitting still! Same with the wild grapes, which haven’t borne fruit since I bought my land, until this year. And the woolly worms I’ve seen are all completely black.

Jackie Clay says her beavers are building their dams higher this year, which means they expect a lot of snow.

Yes, I am getting that feeling. We have been rather spoiled for the last several winters, with the first hard freeze not until November, but this year, it happened this week.

Nut harvests tend to run in approximately 3 year cycles. So we load up while we can. Pick out the nutmeats during the next several months. Vaccum pack and put in the freezer.

Some we glaze and put into jars for Christmas Presents.

I was able to turn off the A/C for a couple days and open up the house and it’s still only late October. Back in the high 80’s by Tuesday, though, so probably just a false alarm.
