The last surviving stretch of German autobahn built under Hitler is set to disappear, almost 80 years after it was first constructed.
The four-kilometer stretch of road on the A11, northeast of Berlin in the state of Brandenburg, dates from 1936 and was part of Hitlers massive motorway-building program of the Reichsautobahn.
Newspaper Welt am Sonntag reported that the road survived Nazism and Communism and, despite some repair work, is still the original stretch from the 1930s.

Wow, 80 years old, that is almost as long as it took to finish the I-45 from Houston to Galveston.
It doesn’t look like they are moving very fast.
I swear I’ve seen video of someone wiping out on that stretch.
Hitler’s Socialist Labor Party had a program wherein Germany’s citizen peons could save money in special accounts in order to purchase an automobile.
Then the rat bastards of the National Socialist German Labor Party stole the money.

I can’t figure out why they can’t make up their minds whether they want Bay Area Blvd to be an overpass or an underpass. It’s changed about three times.
Yeah, it was a program to buy the new ‘’peoples car’’, the Volkswagen. Lots of folks put money aside and few cars were actually delivered, the war came and oh well... . The Autobahn was a show piece of the ‘’New Germany’’ but in reality few Germans owned cars to drive on it. The actual intent of the Autobahn was for moving troops in the event of a war.
The Nazis built a road that lasts 80 years.
PENNDOT cant make a road that will last a season without serious repairs to it.
Sounds like what will happen to our 401ks.
When I grew up in Houston the I-45 was being built, I went to elementary school, high School it was being built, went off to the Army, got married, it was still being built, live out of state, come back, it went on and on and on, now you say they never stop working on it, it is the short road that is never completed.
Say what you want but the krauts know how to engineer...
That has always mystified me as well. What, besides corruption of some kind, could possibly explain it?
After about 30 or 40 years of watching it and knowing that people were spending their entire working lives living off of it until retirement, and then it turning into a multi-generational time span, I started thinking of the mystical.
I was born into the building of the I-45 freeway to Galveston, would my life end when the construction ended?
‘would my life end when the construction ended?”
Relax, you’ll probably live forever.
Wir fahren fahren fahren auf der autobahn....
IIRC only around 200 people ever got their VWs before the war.
