I liked Surprised by Joy, because I found it funny, although much of his childhood was very sad, especially the death of his mother. I can’t remember anything shocking.

“The Great Divorce” is one of my favorites, also. The scene of the man with the lizard on his shoulder has stayed with me profoundly for the last 30 years.

I read the Great Divorce while I was going through a very painful separation from a business partner I had been with for 20 years. I was able to use the image of this man being the one who greats me in heaven.... It helped me get over my anger. I could just reject him and therefore reject heaven or I could accept God’s will.
