Do not ever think that Weiner is a conservative. He is a product of the elitist progressive American university system with the mindset that entails. His so called conservatism came when one of the policies he supported, Affirmative Action, cost him a job. Like the liberal of legend who becomes a conservative when he is mugged, Weiner's so-called conservatism is a result of anger and resentment rather than a studious and rational assessment of American politics.

He also holds an opinion of handguns that seems to be ingrained in persons who were reared in the greater New York metropolitan area from the 40's to the 60's. This includes Sonia Sotomayor and, at one time, myself. This is the belief that rifles and shotguns are fine for hunters to have but pistols are dangerous and should only be possessed by law enforcement and the military. It is a knee jerk reaction and even many otherwise conservative persons there hold it without being aware of why they do. They will profess belief in the Second Amendment as a kind of vague and trivial political theory but look askance and anyone who actually wants to carry a handgun for self defense. Only long service in the armed forces and free me from that ideology.

Someone from the Northeast in general, and New york City in particular, should *ALWAYS* be held suspect on Second Amendment rights unless they have demonstrable indications to the contrary such as NRA Life Membership and owning and shooting a handgun regularly. And Sporting Clays count for nothing, some of the most anti-gun politicians in California shoot skeet and Sporting Clays and try to use that fact to demonstrate that they are not anti-gun.

By the way, if we are to believe Wikipedia, Savage’s oft-repeated story of “losing his job because of Affirmative action” doesn’t add up either. 1. The job he applied for was dean of a journalism school and there were probably people with more relevant experience,at that time, anyway 2. the guy who got the job was not a minority! and 3. It happened in 1995 or 1996, at least two years after he already had his radio gig, even though he claims that it was this bitter experience that tempered him for the radio job.
