We've seen a lot of footage of the tragic Japan tsunami, but this clip is the most horrifying yet. Entitled "South Sanriku -- Tsunami seen from Shizugawa High School," it's shot from high ground, but toward the end of the video you can see panicked residents running for their lives.

Amazing and totally scary. I don’t know if I was seeing correctly, but toward the end it looked like some of them were struggling with some material possession(s). The person in black at the very end appears to be washed away.

At the end it looked like they were trying to help a person in a wheelchair. Hope they got out OK along with the vehicles you can see during the video, some with taillights visible. My gut was wrenching the whole time at how it must feel to see your entire town washed away.

So you know this is old, not new. I have not seen it before so it is new to me.

He is correct, it is "old" in that it has been available for quite a long time. I had it saved in my favorites folder. Although the loss in property was staggering, the loss of life was very, very low compared to the previous tsunami thanks to the tremendous tsunami preparedness warning network that Japan had in place. That said, the deaths of many who died were unavoidable because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes it is impossible to get out of the path of a 30 to 60 foot wall of water and deadly debris that is moving at 150 plus miles per hour even six miles inland!
It was so sad to see cars in some video taken from helicopters appearing to move very slowly even though many were going over 90 to 100 mph being rapidly overtaken by a massive wall of water which all too soon consumed them and moved on. Or motorists frantically driving this way and then that way in order to escape to have all of their ways out consumed in the flood which then swallowed them whole and moved on. Words can not describe the horrors these poor souls endured in their vain attempts to flee the impending doom knowing there was no way of escape.

Every time I see these vids, I am in awe. Awe in just how nearly unstoppable that can be. The only way that does stop is when the forces the drives it dissipates. Makes you realize just how puny we are against nature. Watching that vid and seeing the dust being kicked up had to make those in that hill sense the inevitability of it all. I feel for those that were trapped and killed in that tsunami. Truly unbelievable.

My wife and I vacationed in Hawaii for our honeymoon. We were pretty far away from the surf and put out a blanket. Some surfer jogged over-it was pretty far- to warn us that a big wave could hit out of the blue and not to fall asleep.,

...toward the end it looked like some of them were struggling with some material possession(s). No, those were people in wheelchairs they were trying to drag up the hill.
