I just saw an interesting video with Brandi and Jarryd about what it’s really like in that business. Jarryd says basically it’s a lot of hard work to make a few bucks. He said it’s better to buy more than one unit (they will buy five at one location if possible) because you increase your odds of finding the one locker that has valuable merchandise. And it’s extremely hard work. They said every day is like moving day, and it takes all day to clean out those lockers. Then a lot of stuff has to be taken to the dump, because most of the stuff they find is not worth much of anything.
It’s funny to me that these shows seem to make people want to do this. I watch the show and I see a really hard way to make a living and maybe once in a while you get lucky, the rest of the world apparently just sees the get lucky part. If I manage to retire with a bunch of money I might do it Barry style, but I’d totally team up with somebody running a business and “sell” them the useful but not awesome stuff, just to reduce my losses in between lucky hits.
