;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

scurrilous; adj.

1. grossly or obscenely abusive or defamatory 2. characterized by gross or obscene humour

[C16: from Latin scurrīlis derisive, from scurra buffoon] Synonyms 1. vituperative, insulting, offensive. 2. vulgar

Etymology: "using such language as only the licence of a buffoon can warrant" [Johnson], 1576, from scurrile "coarsely joking" (1508, implied in scurrility), from L. scurrilis "buffoonlike," from scurra "fashionable city idler," later "buffoon." According to Klein, "an Etruscan loan-word."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Those do not sound like nice mountain men-the ones here are just people who have no use for other people, have dropped out of society totally and want to be left alone. They are mostly old hippies who fled civilization in general in the early to mid 70’s-most are vegans with small subsistance gardens, but others keep a few chickens for eggs and hunt squirrels and rabbits.

Approaching their homes unannounced is not a good idea, though-they are as well armed as everyone else in rural areas, and very cautious. They would never call the sheriff, or be in the back of an ambulance unless they were deceased, though-that is how much they distrust all but other dropouts. The bothie/shelter where one lives near one of the trails has satellite TV, so I guess the definition of “dropout” is in the mind of the beholder...

I pass near the abodes of a couple of them when I hike in the deep woods, and if I see smoke coming from a chimney, or smell food cooking, I yell hello and wave, but I don’t stop-if they need something, they will yell back.

Dang I bet that was scary! There’s a stretch of Lawyers Road in Vienna where I always worry about it bc I nearly hit one there years ago bringing xsboy home from hockey practice. We do have rural sections here.

Driving after dusk or before dawn is referred to out here as running the deer gauntlet-my insurance co tells me the average person living in this rural area collides with a deer twice a year on the average.

No disrespect to you personally, but-”Lawyers Road” sounds scary even without deer jumping out on it...

She was near Bedford, on her way down to visit Mom for the weekend. PA is still the home of the most deer accidents. I thin WV has us on a per capita basis.

He should look into DCI. The "front ensemble" (pit) has a great time even though they don't march with the rest of the corps. You can check it out at http://www.dci.org/index.cfm

There are different corps from all over the country, so he could audition for one close to home to cut down on travel costs to the weekend camps that are held before marching season. If he loves playing in the pit and adds his dancing and showmanship to his performance he would probably love the DCI experience.

Funny thing is that VRWCboy marched quads (tenors) and snares all four years of high school and his first two years in college, but after his summer tour marching with the Cavaliers this year he decided to play in the pit for the marching band at college this year and he really enjoyed taking a break from marching. He said he will do pit again next fall at school but will be marching quads again next summer with the Cavaliers.

Where is this program located? In DC (perhaps) or elsewhere. He lives in Richmond, so DC in the summer is doable. Funny thing, the music store where he shops suggested the same program to his mom. She’s looking into it. Thanks for the info.

The program is nationwide. Click here for a map that shows where most of the corps are located.

The closest corps to Richmond are probably the Jersey Surf in Camden County NJ and the Cadets in Allentown PA and the Carolina Crown in Fort Mill SC. The Bluecoats in Canton OH are also not too far. Typically, students would audition in December to January, and if selected will attend weekend camps one weekend each month in February through May. Then once school is out for the summer they have a "move-in" date when they join up with the corps for the summer tour and literally travel by bus and sleep in schools and such for the entire summer culminating at the World finals in Indianapolis.
