LOS ANGELES (CBS) Police say a man who jumped from a four-story parking structure impaled himself on a wrought-iron fence Saturday in Lincoln Heights.
Authorities said about an hour before the unidentified man jumped, they had shooed him out of the parking structure.
The man reportedly impaled himself in the midsection.
Firefighters cut away the section of fence the man was impaled on and took him and part of the fence to a hospital after the roughly 3:40 a.m. jump, a witness told a videographer who arrived after the man was taken away.
The incident occurred at 1143 Mission Road, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Richard Thomas of the Hollenbeck Station.
The fencing was atop a roughly 6-foot wall, Thomas said.
The man was reported in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

I have a friend who fell of a roof and got stuck with a metal fencepost. He was in the hospital for nearly 6 weeks and lost his spleen.

As gory as this sounds, it’s likely the reason he wasn’t dead upon impact, jumping from four stories up.

Doesn't take much of a fall. I fell 5 ft onto a sharp rock that didn't break the skin. I lost my spleen, a kidney, broke 3 ribs and a vertabra. I spent 2 weeks in ICU and went through 17 units of blood.
Slip/falls are dangerous.

How much will it cost to fix the fence? And how much will it cost to put this waste of DNA back on the street?
I know, it's not like real people will have to pay for it...

yks. I saw a news report once where a kid about ten just tripped and fell against a short rod-iron fence with pointed posts.
The point went through he bottom jaw, palate, and out close to one eye...all the way though. It was pretty gross.
He was a brave little guy, he never cried on camera anyway, his mom was crying.
Did your friend go to the hospital with part of the fence attached? That’s what the EMTs did for this kid. I was thinking the vibrations of the cutting the metal would have hurt.
How did your friend fare? (beyond his hospital stay and spleen being removed)

My friend wasn’t left attached to the fence or anything. We did replace the fence several months later with a split rail a bit further away from the house.

I know one person who lost a spleen after falling off a horse and another who lost a kidney the same way. Wonder how many people died from falling off horses prior to modern trauma surgery.
