"Last April, at the Abbey Garden on Great College Street in London, a British widow vented her frustration over a now-defunct state program in Arkansas that may have killed her husband. She addressed Lord Archer of Sandwell, a former solicitor general, who is leading an independent inquiry into how 4,500 hemophilia patients in the UK were exposed to lethal viruses in blood products in the 1970s and '80s. Two thousand have since died of either Hepatitis C or HIV, in what has been called the worst disaster in the history of the nation's health service."

A recent political spot on television has a brief message from former President Clinton speaking in support of now President Obama with Clinton offering his own time in the Oval Office as an example of leadership. Nothing surprising there even if the public memory associates the Clinton presidency with a foolish young woman and a lewd White House tryst. Similarly a quick recollection of President Richard Nixon will evoke the least important events of his time in office, perhaps the Watergate break-in and missing minutes on Whitehouse tapes. But how many will associate Nixon with the final break between the dollar and gold? Or the consequences of this break? So when I see an aging, white haired Clinton in a political ad I think not of ruined reputations and stained dresses but shattered and shortened lives that the role of then Governor Clinton has not been called to account for. The above article and books like " Bad Blood: Crisis in the American Red Cross" by Judith Reitman should serve as a cautionary tale against having our attention diverted by a frivolous and superficial news media. Any information of real worth to the public will require some sifting through the muck of what is called "news".

I know a woman whose daughter got some of that bad blood.
Her life has been a living hell.

Politicians seem to be remembered for events that are of a lesser importance in the life of the country.
Even now the whole story of the Arkansas prison scandal is untold.

The point being the media that should have been the first to inform the public is ever more diligent to obscure and ignore anything of substance.

There were a lot of threads on this subject on Free Republic when Clinton was still in office. Somehow the story disappeared. I think there were something like 300 Canadians who died because they got tainted blood.
To: Verginius Rufus
The Canadians and the French recipients of Arkansas blood products may have numbered in the thousands and the true number of deaths may never be known.
Much of blame for these deaths must be shared by blood collectors that did not want to offend homosexuals by inquiring into their sexual preferences even though it was known that an odd debilitating disease often was a companion of the testable hepatitis.
Death by political correctness.

My father had bypass surgery in the 80’s, surgery went fine, but the hepatitis he got (probably from a blood transfusion) almost killed him then. The complications from blood disorders did kill him eventually.

I’d never even heard about it until I met her mom.
The tragedy of watching a woman watching her daughter slowly disintegrate from Hep C is horrible.

I would say I can imagine but I can’t really. Many deadly cases of both Hep C and AIDS avoided by simply telling homosexuals they could not donate blood.

Was there not a story some time ago about homos who were infected with AIDS ~deliberately~ donating blood in order to infect normal people?
I think it was before we had such stringent blood screening tests.
