In honor of last night’s Home Run Derby, watch two of the all-time greats go at it in an old school Home Run Derby.

For those who don’t know about this style Home Run Derby, the rules are simple. Every pitch that was swung at was either a home run, or an out (exactly the same of modern Home Run Derby rules). Any pitch that was in the strike zone that was not swung at was also an out. Once you made three outs, it was the opponent’s turn. When both players took a turn it was considered an “inning.” Whoever was in the lead after nine “innings” was declared the winner

The announcer says, “Now let’s talk about the big money, $2,000 for the winner and $1,000 for the loser.”

MLB has sure changed.

Back when you could actually relate to the athletes, and they played for the love of the game.....before Curt Flood ruined it all.

Actually Fielder did so poorly in the first round that I was sue he was going to lose.

He’s the first player to win the Derby in both American and National league.

Dad and I never missed Home Run Derby or Saturday Night Boxing.

Of course I’d always miss the ‘knock-out’ punch or Mickey’s winning 400’ home run due to having to hold the rabbit ears up over my head while standing on one foot with 50’ of tin foil wrapped around my body.

Still cherish the memories and will forever.

Killebrew was a great slugger. Mantle was one of the best baseball players of all time. Great stuff!

Old Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. Original home of the 1961 expansion Angels team and the last home of the old PCL Los Angeles Angels. Neat old ball park.
