A Bexar County Jail inmate committed suicide in his cell today using a plastic spoon, officials said.
Robert Rodriguez, 29, was found unconscious and bleeding by a guard in the administrative segregation unit around noon, Deputy Chief Ronald Bennett of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said.
It appears there were self-inflicted wounds from a plastic spoon he had made sharp and used to stab himself, Bennett said.
Rodriguez was arrested June 9 on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and possession of a controlled substance, and was booked into the jail's detoxification unit the next day.
At some point since then, Bennett said, he was placed on administrative segregation, or lockdown.
He was not on suicide watch, officials said.
I guess the next time Obama lunches with the Hispanics, the USSS will have to confiscate the spoons as well.
every time I’ve been to jail, I got a spork.
I feel cheated. can the ACLU sue for me?
Never underestimate American ingenuity.
Ohhh. I see....

A Bexar County Jail inmate who committed suicide with a plastic spoon apparently did so by inserting the utensil into an artery through which he was getting dialysis treatment, officials said.
Robert Rodriguez, 29, was found unconscious and bleeding by a guard in the administrative segregation unit about noon Wednesday, said Bexar County sheriff’s Deputy Chief Ronald Bennett.
Officials with the Bexar County’s medical examiner’s office said today that the man died of a self-inflicted laceration of the upper extremity.
He had a shunt in his arm used during dialysis treatments, Bennett said by email. He removed the shunt and inserted the plastic utensil, causing severe bleeding from his arm.
A dialysis shunt is a passage formed between an artery and a vein to help remove waste products from the blood mechanically.
Rodriguez had apparently sharpened the spoon before stabbing himself, Bennett said.
The inmate was arrested June 9 on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and possession of a controlled substance, and was booked into the jail’s detoxification unit the next day.
Bennett said that at some point, he was placed on administrative segregation, or lockdown. He wasn’t on suicide watch, officials said.
Would have been better if it was a Spork.
"Adios, MOFO."
On the plus side (if there is one), the fellow saved the taxpayer some money in the long term.
Only 29, jail time isn’t that long for those offenses. I’m guessing he was depressed from coming down from a high?
Whew!, it's good to know he used a sharpened plastic spoon instead of a dull one, could've ended it tragedy.

Evidently he had bad kidneys. I wonder if that was due to drug usage?
Anyway - to be 29 and on dialysis... Bummer.
Yeah, but the guy didn't sterilize it first. That's a nasty infection just waiting to happen.
There are sturdier plastic spoons than that. The prison I worked at used a heavy-duty plastic spoon that could be put through an automatic washer and reused over and over again.
Maybe the USSS took away the plastic flatware at the campaign events so POTUS wouldn’t harm himself....kinda like Arkancide watch?
Yeah, he could have lived.
You’d be surprised how inventive these guys can be when they have nothing to do all day. Rub plastic on a cement floor and you can scrape it down to whatever shape you want. Given enough time, you can make a spoon out of a plastic hair brush (who knows why). A toothbrush can become a shank.

Yeah, I felt bad for him. 29, and already on ‘death row’ healthwise. Only 29. Have to cut him some slack for that one.
Could be he got there from drug usuage, but then again maybe the drugs were due to reconition of a shortened life span.
Sometimes life is so unfair.
