'Your' Car Won't Be After 2015
The American Spectator ^ | April 25, 2012 | Eric Peters

Mandatory "Event Data Recorders" will even know you're speeding in reverse.

After a certain point, it's not paranoia.

The latest brick in the wall is the predictably named "Moving Ahead For Progress in the 21st Century Act," also known as Senate Bill 1813. (See here for the full text of the bill itself; the relevant section is 31406.) This legislation -- already passed by the Senate and likely to be passed by the House -- will impose a legal requirement that all new cars made beginning with the 2015 models be fitted with so-called Event Data Recorders (EDRs). These are the "black boxes" you may have read about that store data about how you drive -- including whether you wear a seat belt and how fast you drive -- ostensibly for purposes of post-accident investigation.

In High School in the early 1980’s I once said ‘Someday our grandchildren will ask ‘you could really drive where you wanted to and nobody would know?’ “

Whenever they draft a piece of legislation with a name like,”Moving Ahead For Progress in the 21st Century Act”, I start getting very suspicious and skeptical

I predict lots of broken sensors, and increased used car resale value.

What about the mandatory breathalyzer in the ignition, GPS for the taxes, and wifi for the police overrides?

OTOH, the Obama administration is working hard to be sure I cannot afford a 2015 vehicle until at least 2022.

"I predict lots of broken sensors, and increased used car resale value."

Read page two, plus they will undoubtedly make it a crime to disable the sensors. After all, if everyone is a criminal of some sort, the authorities can decide which laws to enforce selectively to control subversive tendencies.

This is for accident reconstruction only. The feds will not monitor these things, but will charge you with a felony for disabling them.

I'll disable the box and take my chances.

Yes, sure, it's only for accident reconstruction, now.
Wait for a couple of years and you'll start getting tickets in the mail.
Then, who knows, taxes based on how much, and where, you drive. For the good of the planet you know.

Anytime the government wants to know more about me and my activities I get paranoid. And it's not paranoia if the really are after you. And they are.

It’s not as simple as that. They will probably integrated the system into the ignition. Disable the black box and the vehicle won’t start.

I got an eye exam today. I had to look into a the digital lens alignment camera. I asked the person if she was photographing my retinal profile. She said that she was a retired military intelligence worker and that DNA is collected everyday on individuals. According to her, DNA has been saved on surgery patients for five years or so.

My guess is;
Senate Bill 1813 will pass with 51-56 yes votes. Then it will go to the house where it will also pass, probably a little closer. say 250-185. Of course, Obama will sign it. After all it is for the children AND to help bring down the high cost of automobile insurance.
Then the Republicans can say they are being “bipartisan” and really want to “help get America going again”.

Nothing that allows physical access is unhackable. Witness DVD encryption.

I'm not a "car guy" and I've never been interested in tinkering under the hood, but I would get under there to replace these boxes with dummy boxes that feed "OK" signals to the rest of the car computer network.

After which regulation will force the car insurance companies to mandate the black box for coverage.

It’s time to buy a motorcycle after 2015 or so.
