WASHINGTON Two hundred and seven years after their deaths, 13 of the Navys first fallen heroes this week came closer than ever to returning home from the shores of Tripoli thanks in part to the efforts of two veterans advocates from Western New York.
But then Sen. John McCain got in the way.

Seriously? WTH is wrong with McLame? You couldn’t back so many wrong anti American issues on accident. Thanks a lot Arizona.
I really, really despise this guy...
What is left of them after more than 200 years?
Army too. I talked to a general about bring a relative home. He said the Army doesn't disturb the dead. McCain is a pant load but he's right on this.
Maybe it was better this idiot lost in 2008. What a disgrace.
Like Vietnam, perhaps?
Has this “man” ever done anything for the military, since his conversion in the Hanoi Hilton?
"...the Navy fears that if the Intrepids crew is returned home, the Pentagon could be deluged with demands that it bring home the remains of those who died in countless other foreign conflicts."
Before we over-react I would be interested in hearing what some Navy FReepers have to say (if you are Navy, forgive my presumption but your profile doesn’t say it).
The article says that tradition is Seamen are buried where they fell. If that is so, then what is different about this set of our fallen? If not, doesn’t that present logistics difficulties?
Agreed. The reaction on some posts are typical read the headline and the excerpt and knee jerk a post. Reading the entire article (what a concept), one would have to agree with McCain and NAVY historical tradition.
How about NorK-land?

Not 100% positive, but I don't think there are any US Military interred in cemeteries in VN.
Following WWII, the families of troops KIA were given the option of leaving their loved ones in a US military cemetary overseas or bringing them back home for burial. As for those entombed in ships or aircraft, the US is still recovering remains drom crash sites around the world. The remains of those airmen, once identified, are returned to the United States for internment.
There is plenty of precedent for bringing home those sailors who lost their lives in one of our first expeditionary campaigns. McCain, the same guy who’s trying to balance the federal budget on the back of military retirees, is an idiot.
We have a winner.
I agree with your post#10. I’d be interesting in hearing from several different Navy FReepers on this one.
If it were not for sarah - no way i EVER would have voted for this creep.
Ex-Navy McCain would do this? What a turd.
I agree. It might be different if they were buried abroad during a more current conflict and family was still around, but this move makes no sense. Else, we might as well go to Europe and exhume thousands upon thousands....
