The U.S. Army has embarked on an ambitious $7 billion series of utility-scale renewable energy projects.
The new program involves building twenty utility-scale renewable energy installations that rely on a mix of solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass power. The installations will be constructed on land owned by the Department of Defense, at Army bases throughout the U.S.
The program calls for the Army to use its land as equity to leverage about $7 billion in private investment for the twenty projects.

Anyone still really think we cannot balance the Fed Budget on spending cuts alone?
Let see, spend more for less efficient, less robust energy sources. If this had anything but a “green” label attached to it every Leftist in Congress would be screaming “Pentagon wasting money”
Agreed, cut this line item out. They should be building nuclear power plants on bases, not wind farms.
It’s just another scheme to enrich the regime’s cronies.
“....calls for the Army to use its land as equity to leverage about $7 billion in private investment”
Huh? No way.
They’re going to use Army land as equity? For green energy projects? Are the Democrats really that brazen? I can understand some partisan politics, but is there no federal law enforcement person who will stand against this? This is throwing the country out the window to give money to Democrats.
Normally, I’m behind anything the military wants or does....but in the shadow of the Solyndra scandal...I’m very skeptical.
So now this regime will launder the handouts to their supporters via the Military (used as the middle-man), for worthless, un-economic, non-competitive green energy crap?
Mike
If they default...then some investors are going to own Ft. Bragg, et al.
This is so absurd.
In a forward operating zone, fuel delivery is a matter of life and death, both for the fuel truck drivers as well as the soldiers. In the far corners of Afghanistan, the fully-burdened cost of military fuel is around $40 per gallon.
I’m so steaming right now...I have to stop reading the news and find another hobby. GRRR!
I’d just as soon the lights remain off after they repeal DODT, so I’m for green i.e. no energy in government buildings i.e. the barracks from this point on.
Will we hear the roar of the GOP outrage?
Let me guess without reading the article - solar panels? They seem to be so practical that every company producing them is highly profitable.
Correct. These are rigged contract mechanisms feeding the Congressional power structure coffers. They’ve been the most corrupt construction contracts with kickbacks to highly placed politicians. For the last decade they have been awarded and funded at more than twice their construction cost and with the poorest designs, causing twice as many maintenance and repair projects. Those approving them don’t mind their gross inefficiencies because they can now justify repairs by the same players, but several years later in different corporations playing the same game.
A dumb and dumber politically-flavored idea.
This will end up costing more money and energy than it saves.
Blame this chick: Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment Katherine Hammack, an Ubama appointee.
