Yesterday I had to write a check for half the cost of a new front door, sidelights, and surround for the front of my house. They will install it next month after they finish making it.
My dilemma (and agony)? I don't know if I chose the right door. I am deviating from the style of my house somewhat, and I'm getting cold feet. (I do have the legal 3 days to change my mind.)
Did I choose the right material? It's going to be steel, not wood. The reason is the south exposure is just h**l on wood. It's going to be leaded glass. (Too fancy for my southern colonial-styled house?) It's going to be RED. Now that's really deviating from the current black. It will be triple paned and no storm door.
And the cost! This unit will cost more than a brand new Ford LTD Country Squire station wagon that I bought in 1973.
But, it will be made in Wisconsin by USA workers. And I will still have a 42" door, which is just about impossible to find.
It either will be beautiful, or it will be shocking. It's just money, isn't it?
I'm sorry about your leak, and I hope your floors are beautiful and the disruption is not too great. I'm having a company in to the office today to shred 20 years of excess records. Maybe there's a service that will do that for corn stalks!
My husband says get the bearing number off of the failed part on your shredder and go on line to Msc. They will get you any bearing you want and UPS it to your house (or to your son’s business) overnight! Now all you have to do is find a mechanic!
LOL... I could buy 2 new 1941 Chevy convertibles for what the floors are costing to refinish. I assume your house is White and Red will be spectacular! No more swelling of the wood with a steel door and they seem to hold a finish better than wood.
The house is actually red brick of 5-6 varied shades from almost pink to red. You’d call it red, but it really isn’t red. The solid red door and side lites will be a good contrast with the multi shades of brick. The door is not that much red actually because the red is only on the frames of the “lites” the rest is semi-obscure leaded glass which will allow the colors of the entry hall to show through (without too much of a view of the people inside, I hope). I’m afraid that we can no longer roam around in our pjs and negligees! I’m quite far off the road (and the daughters are grown and have children of their own), so we don’t have peeping toms lurking around here.
Several years ago I had my husband remove all of the shutters from the house. Only one pair remains — over the front door. They are black. The old wooden door was black which was just H**l on the paint from the sun beating in all year.
So, the house will be red brick, white trim, black shutters, and a red and glass front entry. They are also going to install a stone threshhold to replace the cracked cement one that is there now. Guess I’ll have to buy a new door mat!
My dilemma has been: Do I go back to the traditional (and somewhat boring) colonial door, or do I pop for something more up to date that will be beautiful but shocking? I opted for the shocking. I have a stiff neck from driving around looking at other people’s doors. We’ve had to explain to some of the dog walkers that we were NOT casing the neighborhoods!
If I remember, I'll post it on the next thread also.
