It's one of the most famous flags in American history, destined to take its place alongside Francis Scott Key's star-spangled banner and the symbol of sacrifice and triumph at Iwo Jima.
It's the flag hoisted at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001, by three New York City firefighters, immortalized in the photo by The Record's Tom Franklin and taken to heart by millions as an emblem of the loss and heroism of that horrible day.
And nobody knows where the flag is.

This should be immortalized in a bronze statue like the Iwo photo. Why hasn’t it? I read somewhere that the PC police objected because the fire fighters shown were all white guys. Disgraceful
Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember something about that flag being carried by the first special ops guys to land in the invasion of Khandahar. And I believe it was raised at the airport when they took that city.
I would have thought the flag returned to the yacht would have been an attempt to replace what was taken that was now a historic artifact. If the owners of the yacht are P.O.ed because the original was not returned, then that opens yet another can of worms for the intent of the article.
Obama probably gave it to Bill Ayers to use for a rug.
I took my father’s veteran’s burial flag to GZ in early 2003 and the guys there raised it over the site after I told them my story. Over a year later a CSM I knew from work I did with the 42ID took the flag to Iraq when they deployed there. It flew over one of Saddam’s palaces. The CSM made sure it got back to me. It will stay in the family forever.
it was unfolded, displayed and refolded at the ceremony at Ground Zero this a.m.
YIPPEE! Thanks for the info.
Thank you kindly. I feel much better.

If it’s cast in bronze, color won’t be an issue will it?
Or cast the statue in a grey metal. Then, the firefighters will look like everyone coming out of the WTC area on 9/11, covered in ash....all the same color, all experiencing the same tragedy...
So now do we go after the whiners like the yacht owners and their attorney? If they are actually whining about this they need to be hoisted on the very same flagpole. From the MSLSD website article from 2003, this has been going on for some time.
If it had been my flag, I would simply visit it to honor those who raised it and to those they raised it to, WITHOUT SAYING A WORD!
I was in NYC in 2003, and Madame Toussaud’s museum had a display, in wax, of that scene. It was amazing.
What a beautiful story. Sometimes the good does prevail.
How can this happen ???
That WAS a powerful image on that day. Everyone we saw at the site of the World Trade Center looked the same, all victims of that tragedy, regardless of race.
thanks.
