Long before the leading Linux desktop environment GNOME arrived in a 3.0 version in April, long-time GNOME users have been grumbling about the radical changes. The dissatisfaction only increased since GNOME 3.0's debut in the beta of Fedora 15 and continued with the Fedora 15 final.
We mention Fedora because no other major Linux distro has yet to make the switch. To avoid it, Canonical gambled on its own controversial Unity UI layer in Ubuntu 11.04, and the Ubuntu-flavored Linux Mint 11 opted for the earlier GNOME 2.32.1.
Now Linux creator and kernel overseer Linus Torvalds (pictured), has stepped in to call the "crazy" GNOME 3.0 an "unholy mess," and has recommended a fork of the GNOME Foundation project.
I myself didn't like the initial KDE4 implementation, but at this point most things have been ironed out.(all software is imperfect in some ways)
GNOME is so-so. Once I went over to KDE, I was a happy camper. GNOME 3 is a smoldering pile of rubber dog shyt. I’ve had nothing but problems with it on my Mint machine.
Is a gnome fork anything like a spork weasel?
fork - spork ??
I need a knife to cut thru the alphabet of acronyms and get to the meat of the matter ;)
People are taking a wait and see attitude.
Yep - KDE4.0 was a mess. Unity isn’t stable on a lot of hardware (read Sandybridge fer instance). So what’s new. I didn’t like KDE4.0, and still don’t really care for it’s new organization. They are trying to “innovate” to the point of making things harder to use instead of easier. They require more horse-power from the GPUs (let alone the CPUs), and don’t get any more work done in the process.
Maybe XFCE is a better idea.
Torvalds had harsh words for KDE4 when it came out. He was correct. I've used KDE 4.4.4 "release 3" for at least 4 months now. It has run very smooth. No complaints at all!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
I am running Xubuntu 11.04 with XFCE and love it. I started using XFCE when Redhat 8.0 came out and it has been my preference ever since then. Gnome is bloated but the standard. I don't need all the bells, buzzers, whistles and lights. (have used linux since ~1997)
For me finding the app I was needing was time consuming
in kde...xfce4 is what I find myself useing mostly
There sure are a lot of people who don`t care for gnome3,
it works pretty good my new dell inspiron, older pc`s not
The one that really disapoints is lxde...lame
While I could run any desktop I want (except for Gnome 3.0 it seems :) ), I prefer the look, layout, and functionality of XFCE.
FVWM for me. XFCE on kids and better half’s dual boot machines, but they prefer Windows.
Can i get on the tech ping list?
Call me a moron, but I like Gnome. Haven’t gone to 3.0 though. For me, it does what I want it to do, but not too much, and is pleasing to the eye.
You’re a moron. ;)
Thank Goodness I have been around long enough to know how to use the command line -run commands, I never use window managers oh I install them just to see the new things going on but when I am working I just use console login.
Well tophat, try asking ShadowAce instead. He is even a Linux guy. Allegedly cool as well.
You’ve been added. Welcome Aboard!!
That will make more people want to use linux another version of GNOME /sarcasm.
