COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- Ohio State will vacate their 12 win 2010 season along with a victory in the Sugar Bowl as part of self-imposed punishment for NCAA rules violations. The recommendations also include a two-year probation that would not cost the Buckeyes any scholarships or ban them from post-season play.
Ohio State is asking the NCAA to go easy on it because it says former-coach Jim Tressel was the only official that knew of infractions.
The university also announced it has reached an agreement with Tressel to change his resignation to a retirement. In a release Ohio State said the agreement was "reasonable" and in the parties' best interests.
I take full responsibility for my mistakes that have led to the ongoing NCAA inquiry and to scrutiny and criticism of the football program," Tressel said in a release from the university. "I am grateful for this opportunity to retire from the university that I so deeply respect and that I will continue to support.

Which AG? If it was Holder, then......< snicker! >
LOL course not.... :)
Say What!!!???
Did they cheat on the field? If not, then there is NO reason to give up legitimate wins. What a bunch of idiots.
OSU is going to get punished because they cheated, meaning the head coach allowed 5 star players who he knew broke NCAA rules to play an entire season without notifying the NCAA (the list is now up to 18).
The coach lied repeatedly about this, then lied about the seriousness of what happened before they played in the bowl game this year.
This is just the beginning, the NCAA will likely discover all of the hot car deals most players got while being there. Year long "loaners" on hot cars to see if the players might like them enough to buy them at the end of the year (ha ha) won't be looked on kindly by the NCAA.
The Bucks will likely lose more scholarships than USC did, and have worse penalties imposed.
They are toast for quite a few years once the hammer comes down. The OSU fans (unbelievably) somehow think Jim Tressel is still a saint in all of this.
What I don’t understand is how they chose the new coach. I refuse to believe that a then assistant coach, who bt definition, spoend far more time WITH the players than the head coach, didn’t know what was going on...
I’m surprised that OSU didn’t offer to stop dotting the “I” for two seasons..
“So is MSU outright Big Ten champs?
They should have gone to Rose Bowl then, eh?”
I don’t follow college ball much anymore, as I think the BCS is utter nonsense. Besides, big school programs and little school programs are so Grand Canyon different that it takes a leap of more than Evil Kineval ever took to say the big school players aren’t paid in one fashion or another.
Short answer, yes, IMO. Besides, ball players CAN go on to be businesspeople, doctors, etc. The fact that many at these big schools DON’T, with all their tutoring and free rides and so forth, just plain stinks.
“OSU didnt offer to stop dotting the I “
I think people would end up dead if that were proposed. Sometimes, people get to do that who are unrelated to the band. It is a nice gesture.
Years and years ago, I saw Woody Hayes get to do that, IIRC. Warts and all, you had to admire the guy. He was an actual military historian.
Oh. And MSU is not a small school. By any means.
But it should have had the chance to go to a bowl game. Cheating in any form is bad for the entire institution, whatever the school. From the President, Provost, Departments and on down the line.
The players had teachers and tutors.
The NCAA (Not Consistent About Anything) is complicit in all this. They new of the violations and let O.S. play in the Sugar Bowl anyway.
One thing the NCAA cannot change, even when victories are forfeited and asterisks are placed on the official record, is the memories of events on the field. There USC is 13-9-1 all time against Ohio State, including the last seven straight :-)
The Hogs got completely screwed by cheating teams last year, having also lost to Auburn. What is great, though, is that it is just a matter of time before Auburn (and now Oregon) vacate all wins from last season. Eventually the Hogs could very well claim the national championship from last year. Bama would if in the same situation.
IMHO this past season will be a historic one. It will either be the turning point when college football cleans up its mess. Or it will be the turning point for when the NCAA loses all credibility and eventually crumbles, at least with respect to football.
Interestingly, the Hogs were involved in other turning points in college football. When they won the national championship in 1964 as the only undefeated team at the end of the season, the voters thereafter changed the timing of their voting. Before then they voted for the national champion prior to the bowl games. Following that season, they waited until after the bowl games to vote. The Hogs also caused the last major conference realignment when they left the SWC, killing it, for the SEC.
Can't wait for this new season, 50 days away.
Just realized that with OSU’s vacating its win in the Sugar Bowl, its winless streak against the S.E.C.remains in tact. O for 10.
I was at that game (1983). The only year I had season tickets. I also have his autograph on a napkin. The people suggesting the death penalty are just beyond stupid.
True enough. Though getting to play all those Rose Bowl matchups in your own backyard, in what amounts to a home game, is quite the advantage.
That’s rich coming from a Buckeye. 27 of the Buckeye’s last 60 regular season games were played in the State of Ohio. Last year the fearless Buckeyes didn’t leave home till week five of the season.
I also don’t remember Pasadena being much of a problem from 1947 to 1959 when the Big Ten won 12 out of 13.
Playing in Columbus hasn’t helped all that much either. In the 16 games played outside Pasadena, with 8 played in each home field, SC is still 10-5-1, and hasn’t lost in either the Coliseum or the Horseshoe since 1960.
