Bilguisa and Salimata Simpore withdraw from Women's World Cup amid claims they are men

It was the controversy threatening to turn the Women's World Cup into a pantomime, a farce in which the Ugly Sisters are, allegedly, actually the Ugly Brothers.

But just as the world was preparing to train its lenses on Equatorial Guinea's star siblings, Bilguisa and Salimata Simpore, who opponents have accused of being substantially more Arthur than Martha, the pair have withdrawn from their country's squad.

Australia's opponents in their second game in Germany have been the target of unkind allegations by several of their opponents in the African championships that served as qualification for the World Cup.

The presence of Salimata is controversial enough, given claims she has already played for Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

But it's the question of the sisters' gender that has sparked most indignation, with Ghana captain Florence Okoe declaring: "It is not as if we are throwing sour grapes, just because we have lost. Rather, this is the fact and it is up to the organisers to do something about this. It is not good for African women's football."

The team's captain, Genoveva Anonma, has also been the subject of similar claims, though she remains in the squad for now.
