COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Asia Vanderwege said she never saw the signs that said "No Soliciting" and "Beware of the Dog." The 14-year-old was attacked by two dogs on Thursday when she went to a home selling candy. "I rang the doorbell and heard dogs barking," said Vanderwege. "I stepped back a little bit and then they burst through the screen door and came at me. Then they were biting me." The bite on Vanderwege's wrist has healed, but she said she has a deeper gash on her hamstring.
The American bulldog and boxer mix have been taken to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, and could be euthanized if the owner doesn't pay a $1,200 bonding fee in the next week. Both dogs have a history of biting people. Vanderwege said she was selling candy with other teens who are part of a summer program called Rocky Mountain Teens. The kids go door to door selling candy, and top sellers get to go on trips. Vanderwege said participants sell alone or in pairs. KRDO Newschannel13 talked to Vanderwege Tuesday as she and several other teen girls were on their way to sell. The leader of the group avoided our camera and told the girls by phone that she didn't want to talk to us. Vanderwege's grandmother, her legal guardian, said that she's checked into the program, and that it's a good way for teens to earn money and stay out of trouble. Vandewege said she doesn't take responsibility for what happened. She said she regularly goes to doors with No Soliciting signs, and some times, those people buy.

What's the most efficient way to keep them out off your porch or, failing that, send them packing?
Walk out on your front porch with your Congressman Wiener hanging out. They’ll run for cover.
I just don’t answer the door. Anybody I want to see knows to call before coming over. This strategy also works with political candidates, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Mormons.
Obviously “No Soliciting” and/or “Beware of Dog” signs don’t work...
...but an American Bulldog and a Boxer-mix seem to have worked pretty well for one guy.
That’s ballsy.
This idiot deserves what she got. And worse.
Earlier in the article they quoted her as saying she didn't see the signs.
Then why in the world would they give these dogs back to the owners? They should either be euthanized or given to someone who knows how to retrain aggressive dogs. (And even those folks don't always have success.)
I have security dog signs on my property and no soliciting sign too. they have worked for me, no door to door salesmen. But the signs are an abject lie! You are only in danger from my dogs if you have food in your pockets. Then you are in danger of being licked to death.
Good grief! She’s only 14 years old!
Make her pay for the damaged screen, and if they put the dogs down, vet bill from the euthanasia as well. Actions have consequences and if she’s still refusing to see she’s responsible after admitting she ignores signs, she needs to be “bitten” by consequences til she is.
14 years old is time to be fully responsible for your acts as was traditional for 13 year old people in the past!
This 14 year old admits to ignoring signs elsewhere ,and obviously playing the "I'm just a little girl selling "X"" to get your sympathy;no sympathy here.
Some cities prohibit kids from going door to door selling stuff to prevent predator attacks on kids.
These two watch dogs we have will beat you with their tails.
Dogs seem to work.....
I’m glad the girl survived the experience, assuming she absorbed the lesson. As a day-sleeper with a heaping dose of the leavemealones of my own, I’m really feeling for the dogs who were only doing their job.
Bad of the owners not to better secure the dogs within the bounds of the home, though. If you have known biters, ensure they can’t or won’t breach the home barrier on their own.
EXACTLY. As said by someone earlier she should be held responsible for ALL costs associated with this including the $1,200 to get the dogs released.
Thank God I don’t live in the city.
“Bad of the owners not to better secure the dogs within the bounds of the home,” Why they have a fenced yard the the girl entered without permission and they are just protecting the owners propoerty.
