In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
ob·lo·quy [ob-luh-kwee] noun, plural -quies.
1. censure, blame, or abusive language aimed at a person or thing, especially by numerous persons or by the general public.
2. discredit, disgrace, or bad repute resulting from public blame, abuse, or denunciation.
Example sentence:
"Not all writers or artists seek or ably perform a public role, and those who do risk obloquy and derision, even in free societies."
Salman Rushdie, New York Times, April 20, 2011
Etymology:
142575; late Middle English. Obloquy means "harsh or critical statements about someone," and also "the condition of someone who lost the respect of other people" both of which apply here. It's a word far more often written than spoken, with a formal tone that suits a serious issue. It comes from the Latin obloquy, "to speak against," from ob- "against" + loqui to "speak" (making it a relative of words like soliloquy and elocution).
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
