HOUSTON -- An unarmed man who was shot in the neck by a Houston police officer has become the latest to allege police brutality in a lawsuit against the city of Houston, Local 2 Investigates reported.

Steven Guidry, 42, who lives on Houston's south side, was shot after an officer tried to pull him over for failing to use his signal before turning on Feb. 24, 2010, on Noel Street.

At the time, Houston police said he was shot because the officer feared he was reaching into his coat, potentially going for a weapon.

In his lawsuit filed Tuesday in Houston Federal Court, Guidry points out that he was unarmed and no drugs were found in his car, and he claims his hands were clearly visible on his steering wheel when the officer drew his gun and then fired.

I grew up in Houston, that used to be an extremely violent police department, beatings were routine, on the streets, at the jail, and even at headquarters.

Sue the Houston Poilice Union and not the citizens.

Why are these officers still on the street?
If you did your job like they do theirs, you'd likely be fired - but not at HPD

"Criminal justice professor Larry Hoover said HPD's disciplinary system of gradually imposing more severe suspensions, coupled with the ability of an officer to appeal a firing to an arbitrator, makes it hard to get rid of bad officers."

How many of these union thugs are out there? I'm waiting for some individual cops to start coming out and fingering the bad cops. You know, like we want the Moslems to do.

The cops need to let the citizenry gethomesafeeverynight.

Amen! Unions are bad, period! They are especially bad when representing pubic employees. There is no "other side" when politicians are opposing their benefactors.

Why would they shoot at lawsuits?

Houston Police have been protected by the city brass for decades. They have been as dangerous as the crooks.

And for running a stop sign you are shot dead? Traffic court must take place in the hospital or the morgue.

Actually its not the traffic offense these cops are executing people over, its the act of disrespecting the cops... an any in any form all cops wholly believes is punishable by a violent beat down or death, whatever they can “justify”...

Total BS reason to stop someone.

I said “hi” to a cop today at McDonalds and got a stare-down for the entire time I was waiting for my to-go order. I think he was waiting for a “What is your problem?” moment...

I have to disagree with the last part. Citizens are responsible for their government. Houstonians have been negligent in that responsibility by allowing HPD to behave as it has.

If they get hit hard enough in the pocket, they'll either wake up to their duty or have their city turn into Detroit.

BWAHAhahaha

If you shot everyone who didn’t signal turns in Mass, the state would be depopulated in short order!

Back in my sysadmin days I hung out on alt.sysadmin.recovery. One of the British sysadmins was considering a job in the Boston, Ma, U.S.A. area and was concerned about driving here. Best advice he got?

“Use your turn indicator once or twice a year and you’ll be fine.”
